The issue of sanity is not a matter of the individual 'convincing' anyone - the decision is taken by a panel of trained and experienced psychiatrists who will assess the individal's mental state at the time of trial, and offer an informed opinion of their likely mental state at the time the crime for which they are being charged was committed.

If it were simply down to the prisoner's behaviour, then Broadmoor would be twenty times the size it is now.

I am not sure quite why Broadmoor is often regarded as a 'soft' option when it comes to incarcerating ne'er do wells.

He certainly seems to have snapped. It would be interesting to find out what was the 'stresser' in his melt-down. Hopefully, he won't be able to smash his head to pieces before all the facts are gained.

He should never have been in a position to injure himself. In my force when we had a suspected murderer in custody he was placed in a cell with the door open and an officer sat on a chair in the doorway.

Broadmoor probably isn't a "soft" option but I guess a police officer might feel safer (from abuse by fellow inmates) there than in another high security facility.
