The function of schools is to educate its pupils and prepare them for live beyond education. If they are going to earn a living and make a contribution to the society in which they live they will be surprised to find that it often means complying with terms and conditions with which they may not necessarily agree but which they have to swallow in order to earn a...

^that to untitled.
paigntonian: "Pixie: This thread is about racism not uniforms. " - this is not about racism, this about people wanting special treatment. There is no racism here.
untitled: "They are not asking to not wear a uniform they are protesting against changes to the uniform rules and with some justification" - what justification? the changes are very sensible as far as I can see.
judge 15:18, bang on as usual.
As I said. ‘We’re not white so we should do as we like’. That’s the bottom line here.
// It makes much more sense to teach children that behaviour is more important than appearance //

schools, parents, can teach that all they like. it makes no difference. children are cruel beggars, they will pick on the one that's different. whether that's because their trainers don't have the right letter on them, or if the little crocodile logo on their top faces the wrong way, or if they got their glasses from somewhere other than barnard castle. it doesn't matter. if the kid doesn't conform, they will get picked on.

Is a school classed differently to the workplace? The reason I ask is that we have uniform at work which includes religious wear, all of which is grey/black. Maybe local uniform retailers should work with schools to cater for and incorporate religious wear into their products.
Could those with hair blocking the views of others not sit on the back rows?

if some have hijabs that are brightly coloured, have they been asked not to wear them - same with some afro caribbean hairstyles, have they been told to tone them down, if so maybe as said the pupils have some points. But honestly to take it this far, seems the height of stupidity. Is this another storm in a teacup.

Schools in my town have hijabs in school colours.

The amount of time and effort those go to to tame, flatten and scrape back afro hair has been well documented for quite some time, my own fair haired daughter got sent home for an extreme hairstyle when all she had done was have a trim which brought her inherited curls springing into view.
Do you really struggle to formulate replies without disguised expletives TTT?

diverse in the Capital and probably major cities like Birmingham,
but the rest of the country, i wonder....
my brother lives in a quiet backwater, and if you saw a black person you would be amazed.
I am sick of being labelled a racist when we are one of the mots tolerant diverse countries in the world.
If they want to strike and miss school days fine, but for very day they strike bring the exam date forward a day.Its their future they they are screwing up.
This constant barrage of black/ethnic this and that creates racism. People are getting sick of it.
“ First I’ve heard of it. ”

It must be wrong then! :/
“ what justification? the changes are very sensible as far as I can see.”

The school wishes to ban big hair... despite having a number of students with afros... and “colourful” hijabs - for what possible reason could colourful hijabs be a problem?
It is.
