Mr Cameron has suffered from the same affliction that occurs with the status of high power - the belief that anything is acceptable.
Of course he has been exposed on this occasion, and found to have acted inappropriately, although not illegally.
Because no law has been broken, an enquiry will simply reiterate that, there may be a tightening of the rules, which will simply mean that former high-ranking ministers are expected to act with the morality that their position entailed when in office.
In other words, ex-ministers will have to behave as a matter of law with the same sense of honour and propriety that the rest of us simply take as read.
It's a sad state of affairs that it will take a change in the law to make individuals behave in a manner that is natural and appropriate to everyone else.
Mr Cameron comes out of this with no dignity whatsoever, which will matter to him not one iota.
