Just seen the report on Sky news. They asked one crematorium how many deaths in the last 24 hours and they responded with a number that was less than they had seen brought in in the last hour. They later questioned another set of figures and were told by the officials that they had been ordered from above to quote lesser figures. So what's going on? Gawd knows what the true figure is.

There are a number of reasons why India, or indeed any Country, might massage the figures to make them appear less. I would dearly love to know why we, apparently alone, would go to such great lengths to make the figure higher.

Thailand have been doing the same, even a year ago they were denying that there was a problem, even though bars, shops and businesses were closing down and hospitals were rammed with patients, it must be that they are scared of losing tourists, Thai people hate to 'lose face', this is whats happening with the Thai authorities.
What indicates obsession to you?

You showing outrage at a probable mix up over death figures that pale in comparison to a population of one and a third billion
Not like Sky to sensationalise a story that none of the other mainstream media make a meal of but then that is their m.o. and generally always has been regardless of subject
As to India. I wouldn't believe Sky news if they told me it was Wednesday. I shall turn my mighty mind to the question as and when more info comes out.
Naughty Piggy.

Sticky bottle: "You showing outrage at a probable mix up over death figures that pale in comparison to a population of one and a third billion" - it's not a mix up, the figures are being supressed deliberately, if I had poste many times on this then you may have a point about "obsession.
"Not like Sky to sensationalise a story that none of the other mainstream media make a meal of but then that is their m.o. and generally always has been regardless of subject" - have you examined all the media? a simple google indicates that this is npt merely sky "sensationalising".

PS note how I enclosed what you said in quotes
It was the BBC who said there are over 200,000 deaths. I say you can double that - their government are running scared of the people im sure.

double emmie? x10!
not sure it would be as high as that, surely some would have reported on it over time.
Strange then that the anomaly over figures is not even being mentioned by the BBC.
Maybe they think there is not much to the ‘story’?
Trying to get accurate death figures in a country with that size of population with a pandemic that means general movement is restricted anyway will be about as easy as juggling soot
its all that's in the news about India's pandemic, forgetting that everywhere is suffering.
Thanks for the link emmie but there is nothing in it about inaccurate reporting as Sky are claiming
From my link, this is probably why the figures are higher than quoted.
//India only counts those who die in hospitals, which are currently full with many patients left to die at home or in the streets //
general movement of people, you are kidding, these are people travelling hundreds of miles to get loved ones into hospital or to a doctor, nurse, and being turned away, of course they have freedom of movement, how could they not. Pictures from India before the second wave was one of complacency, cricket matches going ahead, people en masse washing in the Ganges, where dead bodies are piled high.
No one knows what the real Covid figures are since most people who die have no post mortem. Figures from all over the World are a guide.

Much is being made of the high numbers in India. Yes, they are high but they have a population 23 times ours. Multiply our highest rate and they are nowhere near.

The true figure will never be known from India, the infrastructure is poor and many people are really poor and will have no access to medical facilities. They will simply be cremated.

As for deliberate suppression I'd want a bit more evidence than one report from Sky. If a Sky reporter told me it was raining outside I'd put my Sunnies on.
