This was an HS2 issue and 18,000 voters didn’t turn out. The Tory candidate was also very woke and green. However, this should be a wake up call for Boris. There is a whole different country outside the Westminster Bubble and it is fed up with being lied to, fobbed off, and locked down. You can’t run a Democratic country by fear.

A freak result based on local issues plus almost the entire Labour vote going to the LDs. This is a false dawn for the opposition. Let's see how the Tory vote holds up in Batley.

B/A 11.35. Spot on with the "Westminster Bubble".

11.58, lets just hope for another Freak result, july the first then.
It is not freakish that the Governing Party loses a mid term by-election. It is just unexpected in a place like Chesham and Amersham with such a big majority.
In the polls the Conservatives are doing well, and they seem popular with the voters. So it was a bit of a shock.
It’s no sort of dawn fir the Opposition I fear. They polled 622 votes.

However it’s a slap in the face for a government which was perhaps beginning to think it could be as incompetent as it pleased with no electoral repercussions

Indeed. Everybody bar the LibDems and the Tories lost their deposits.
I think exactly what JD said. All the local FB pages were filled with HS2 reasons and they appeared to be the only choice.
They were also the only ones that bothered, visiting houses, letters, leaflets, and while some found it annoying, others seemed impressed with the effort. To the point someone posted "Sarah Green. I've only heard from you once today. U OK hun?" Lol.
Temporary and for a specific reason. Plus- it's so blue here, people often won't bother at all (particularly in a by-election) unless they positively want someone else. Complacency all round.

Who cares who won , as long as the Con Crony Club LOST!.
People (ie the Tories) would be very foolish to write this off as “just HS2”. Plainly it’s an issue, but most of the candidates were opposed to it. The Tories struggled in many similar seats in the recent local elections : in our area they did really badly
Johnson will try to waffle past it. He and his missus will have to be dragged out of No10.

This is the problem when the public allow a dictator to flourish.

13.29 YMB. It's good to see at least one Dyed in the wool Tory ,can see through Johnson & wife .
The Conservatives had a 16,000 majority in Chesham and Amersham.

There are over 100 Tory seats with smaller majorities. That is 100 MPs who might be a little concerned with how their leader and government are shaping up.
Let's see what happens to the Tory vote in Batley. I fear it may drop because of the delay in lifting the lockdown.
