What's the illegal bit?
holding the referendum wouldn't of itself be illegal. but without the sanction of westminster, it wouldn't have much validity beyond advice.

last year's referendum act sets the framework for such a referendum, but it will require parliamentary action - either a westminster referendum act (like the last one), or a change in the law giving scotland the power to do it themselves - before it would be legally binding.
Look at their smarmy, soy filled faces.
Teach them a lesson, I say.
Cast them adrift with no pity for, say, 10yrs.
If any of them survive, they'll have rediscovered something they clearly lack....humility.

yes mush, they can hold a vote but it would be little more than a straw poll. It would be pointless because the unionists would boycott it anyway.

what saddens me though is now they'll have the weird beards in "government". I feel so sorry for what that dour fanatic has inflicted on the good people of Scotland.
The Referendums (Scotland) Act 2020 allows referendums on any subject including independence to take place.

The results of any referendums are not binding on the UK Government.

So it wouldn’t be illegal.
There's worse illegality about the place, apparently.
We may yet see the majority needs another tweak later as greens with a conscience step back a wee bit.
The Conservatives needed a partner in 2010 and the LibDems help form a Government.

The SNP were 1 short of a majority so needed the Greens 8 votes.

A marriage of convenience rather than a coalition of chaos.

gromit 10:54, that's the Scot "parliament" as I said above it would in effect be a straw poll because the results would not have meaning unless Parliament approved it first. By announcing a referendum, she adds another con on the Scottish people.

TBH once the weird beards want to do something stupid, and they will, I can see the alliance crumbling pretty quickly.
That’s it sorted then. Ttt ( an expert in all things a Scottish) has given his opinion . Next post ,. :-)

it's obvious to anyone who can read anne, no expertise needed.
it has been said this is the first time greens have been "in government" - which is true enough. but they have tasted political responsibility before in Brighton. it started off OK, but then political infighting did for them.....

Now where is Brighton? I remember England .
Yes it is Ann, well done. And your point is?
I think the Greens will have to be very careful, they are the minority Party in this arrangement and as the Lib Dems found out being in Government is very different from sitting on the sidelines spouting things you know you wont have to implement.

On the referendum side I just wish the Scottish would hold one, or Johnson give them one so they can go. Enough of the whinging on, let them join the EU, if they can, and we can stop sending money over the border and bring our shipbuilding etc down south.
Think you should change your header OP. Nothing "illegal" about it.
Agree youngmafbog and at the same time you can take your trident missiles back.
YMB, where are you going to build your ships ?
Question Author
Scotland isn't the only place in the UK where ships are built !
