I am totally sick of the SNP. Once again Nicola is threatening to make changes to the countries hospitality industry but making the industry wait another week before she decides like a sword of damocles hanging over the countries heads giving businesses little time to implement the changes it needs. Up here in Scotland the Scottish government have the powers to change things but are not. We need the following:
1. Tougher rules on masks and public places no masks or no lanyards, no entry make it the law, the number of people flouting it and getting away with it unbelievable. Because shop workers and public transport workers too scared of offending people.
2. Track and trace is very relaxed some places ask for details a lot of places don't. Make this tougher
3. Bring back social distancing to 2m.
If all the above doesn't work then Austria has the right approach only the unvaccinated should have their lives restricted. I along with many others will not tolerate a Winter lockdown because of the selfishness of others in this woke society

From one of your links:
Results from epidemiological and clinical studies assessing the effectiveness of masks in reducing disease transmission suggest that mask wearing can provide some benefits10,11, especially with early interventions, but often the results lack statistical significance

So they appear not to work, or at least no real proof.

“ The preponderance of evidence indicates that mask wearing reduces transmissibility per contact by reducing transmission of infected respiratory particles in both laboratory and clinical contexts. Public mask wearing is most effective at reducing spread of the virus when compliance is high. ”

“ Both surgical masks and unvented KN95 respirators, even without fit-testing, reduce the outward particle emission rates by 90% and 74% on average during speaking and coughing, respectively, compared to wearing no mask, corroborating their effectiveness at reducing outward emission. (…) Further work is needed to establish the efficacy of cloth masks at blocking expiratory particles for speech and coughing at varied intensity and to assess whether virus-contaminated fabrics can generate aerosolized fomites, but the results strongly corroborate the efficacy of medical-grade masks and highlight the importance of regular washing of homemade masks..”

“ Although the filtration efficiencies for various fabrics when a single layer was used ranged from 5 to 80% and 5 to 95% for particle sizes of 300 nm, respectively, the efficiencies improved when multiple layers were used and when using a specific combination of different fabrics. Filtration efficiencies of the hybrids (such as cotton–silk, cotton–chiffon, cotton–flannel) was >80% (for particles 90% (for particles >300 nm). ”

It isn’t true to say that there is no scientific evidence…. it is not cast iron and masks do not eliminate transmission entirely but they do reduce it significantly…

also that quote is from a lit review it is not the conclusion of that study (the nature one)
I don’t patronise you, bob. I often disagree with some of the things you say, which is completely different. I don’t care whether you wear a face covering or not. In England it would be your choice and I would respect that. I would ask that you respect the choice others make without denigrating them. The only question you might ask yourself is “how long am I going to do this?” The answer, bearing in mind the current situation, is “for many years, possibly decades.” This is because the virus is here to stay and its spread will not be contained by even the harshest of measures currently in force in the UK. So if you see a need for face coverings now, you will still be seeing that need in five or ten years’ time.

//Nj even said we should avoid testing and even go in work if we're infected for the sake of the economy..//

No NJ didn’t. You suggested I did few days ago and I pointed you to what I really said.

// the results strongly corroborate the efficacy of medical-grade masks and highlight the importance of regular washing of homemade masks..”//

People don’t use medical grade masks. In fact they were specifically told not to use them initially as they were in short supply and needed by medics. They also do not wear and treat non-medical masks in the prescribed manner. - a point I emphasise whenever the argument is raised. Very few use multiple layer masks or masks made from the combination of materials quoted; most wear them incorrectly; few keep them clean when not in use or change them regularly. It’s no good saying “they should” because they don’t.
Every time I see the SNP - I keep thinking it is all about the SNIP that the men get
New metastudy out in BMJ today suggests thst mask wearing significantly reduces transmission of covid 19

"Very few use multiple layer masks or masks made from the combination of materials quoted;"

how do you know? multi layered ones are quite cheaply available... even my mum's home made one is multilayered... can't say I know the composition of every mask on the market either... even if unmixed fabric, cotton is also more effective at higher threadcounts...
