The result means the Tories have lost a parliamentary election in North Shropshire for the first time in 117 years and for the first time ever since the constituency has been in its current form.

A swing of 37.2 per cent saw Mrs Morgan win with 17,957 votes while Tory candidate Neil Shastri-Hurst finished second with 12,032 and Labour's Ben Wood was third with 3,686.

That is a pitiful showing by Labour
i think that this was a protest vote, i hope that Boris sits up and takes notice.
We will have to agree to disagree ichkeria
Labour went from second to third
That is poor in relation to the pressure BoJo is under
One would have expected the opposition to make some gains
This result is quite significant in my opinion
Just hearing on bbc news that Labour have gone from 12000 votes to 3000 since the last vote there in 2019
Emmie // i hope that Boris sits up//
I think Boris is going to have to walk if public confidence in the Government is to be restored.
we will see Danny, seems a pity, sorry, if he does go.
Stickybottle, how very interesting.’ Not quite as clear cut as it first seemed then.
Turnout was 46.3%, Helen Morgan got 21.8% of the electorate to vote for her.
In 2019 a 67.9% turnout got Owen Paterson 42.7% of the electorate to vote for him.
Emmie, // sorry, if he does go.//
I agree but he has to face the reality that, at the moment, he is a liability.

Eh ?
Stickybottle, you said Labour lost 9000 votes. I wonder where they’ve gone?

I don’t want Boris to go. All in all I think he’s done a pretty good job. It’s just a shame people demand perfect because whoever is at the helm they’re not going to get it:
who would take over if he goes?
Good question Emmie.Nobody stands out as a likely leader at the moment.

Well I am no political expert but I would hazard a guess they went to the Lib Dem candidate !? They certainly did not go to the Conservative candidate

I agree and have said as much over the past few months but in light of all the recent revelations and debacles it is the perfect opportunity for others to take advantage
Labour certainly are not because of their own infighting so it is inevitable that others will
Sticky //you said Labour lost 9000 votes.'//
That would include voters who stayed at home.
Stickybottle, I would hazard that guess too. Odd. Labour loses 9000 and LibDems win by 6000. Where’s my abacus?
Meh - I though Cons would win but these things happen at by-elections. LibDems will be trumpeting a great revival but it will get reversed at a GE.
Labour’s performance here is irrelevant.
For the reasons stated. This was a protest vote as by-elections often are. Almost certainly N Shropshire will go back to the Tories at the general election when the huge numbers of Tories voters who stayed away yesterday rouse themselves however reluctantly to do that they’ve always done.
The fact also is the Lib Dems cannot win a general election however much you think Labour cannot. They need to realise that. I’m not hopeful of it however, so there’ll be no official or even unofficial pacts.
Also, however David Aaronovitch talks in the Times of the Tories having moved to “masters of the universe” mode. I thought of some people here when I read that! It’s not really a healthy attitude

Still does not fully account for a 34 percent swing to Lib Dems !
Nor does it explain a 75 percent drop in the Labour vote
