I just hope Boris gets done quicker than we got Brexit done. :0)))))
ich: "You are confident Labour will regain Bury South whenever then Tora :-) " - yes all the Red wall seats will revert to Labour, sadly the Pandemic has removed the possibility of any sort of government since the election. The voters there will not take account of that and revert, that is the nature of the public, they will disregard the crises and the fact that we have not actually seen any sort of government beyond managing the crises. Labour would have done exactly the same but the red wall seats will disregard that. So yes I fully expect the red wall seats to be red again. There is an outside chance that in the case of Bury the people will rebel at having a Labour MP thrust upon them having elected a Tory but I doubt it. Ditto the other inevitable red wall defections.

That’s defeatist talk!
No it's objectivity and pragmatism, things the left do not have and the reasons why they are rarely trusted in government.
If he has any integrity he will hold a by election.
How do these things work...has all his staff jumped ship or has he cast them aside?
More from the bbc correspondent :

“If a prime minister misleads Parliament, should be resign?"

In the vast majority of situations, a prime minister would answer "yes" to this question.
The fact that Boris Johnson ducked it neatly encapsulates the mess he currently finds himself in.
Because, for all the revelations about parties, misleading the Commons is conventionally seen as something no prime minister can survive.

A highly respected senior Tory and former minister sticks the knife into Boris by telling him to go
Ironically whilst stood directly behind him ! Lol

The knives are out
Lots of animal metaphors and puns abound lately

I guess the defector has made himself a sacrificial lamb
Boris will soon be hearing about stalking horses no doubt
good answer from stickybottle - BA
he can lick my bottle any time - am I allowed to write that?
and woy - I am certain he kept his party officials informed

the difficulty for christian is on the lines of - - "I always wanted to be in politics but not like this !"

[yearn and yearn agoo the one MP who said, dont invade suez..... an arabist ( camel) right of course - - - -ry right, so right .... etc
was chucked out of the party lost the 1959 election and sort of beccame a tescos check out clerk] - the consequences of being bang on correct 1956
and woy - I am certain he kept his party officials informed

How on earth can you be certain of that?

"If he has any integrity he will hold a by election. "

Some would call it "integrity"
In this situation others might call it "rubbing salt in the wounds" ...
I agree with Roy. There should always be a by election when MPs change sides. He was elected under a Conservative banner. If he opts to jump ship the electorate should be given the option of voting for him - or not - on a Labour ticket.
Question Author
He had a majority of 402 in 2019.
He's probably had more letters or emails than that from Tory voters

So, like I indicated, I doubt too many from the govt benches will be calling for a by election
//Like at least one AB'er, the minister seeks to minimise the issue by referring to it as 'a drinks party'. //

It seems to me most ABers who are complaining about this are referring to it as a 'drinks party'. That doesn't minimise it. Quite the opposite.
Hi majority is irrelevant. Any politician crossing the floor, either way, should hold a by election.

It does seem a very short sighted thing to do. There is no guarantee the labour party will want to put him up in the next GE and in addition I dont see how his letter of no confidence can stand now.

I agree with TTT though, doubtful many red wall seats will be kept although there is a chance if Johnson and his green rubbish causing massive deprivation to the poor is ousted.
Damn traitor...
Ich, so let him put his money where his mouth is, Ich. With luck he'll be elected on a Labour ticket and can then sit on those benches in all good conscience.
It was a 'drinks party', but I am sure most are not bothered about that its the one rule for me and one rule for thee that is the problem. together with all the lies until he was cornered.
In light of what Boris has been doing since the last GE it would not take much to swing it back to red if there were a by election tomorrow :
:

Christian Wakeford won Bury South in 2019, after the constituency backed a Labour MP at every election since 1997.

The seat was won by a narrow margin of 402 votes - or a 0.8% majority.

More telling for me was the attack by David Davis who probably echos more of what the back benches are feeling
