Yushchenko vowed to end the Russian lease on Sevastopol when he became president in 2004. Yanukovich went back on this when HE became president in 2010. Yanukovich was taking Ukraine back into Russia's orbit and it was Euromaidan that stopped this.
Russia, the EU and Ukraine brokered a deal to keep Yanukovich in power but the next day he fled to Moscow, and that was what planted the seeds of what we see now, with the mythology of Ukrainian fascism, etc.
Putin was always coming back to power.
