Blubster, I believe the definitive Joan (so far, at least) was Falconetti in Dreyer's silent film from 1928. It was all done with faces, but it's one of the great classics

I haven't seen any of the films cited here. All I know is based on a reading of Jean Anouilh's play "L'Alouette", which used a lot of Jeanne's written trial records. Like most historical figures, I presume that her story has been used for various purposes, and has been interpreted and altered. I think it's a bit daft to get in a strop about someone staging their own take on an old story. It's what writer's and dramatists do.

it could well be that this play is very “of it’s time” and not much else… most art produced in any given era will be… there is no harm in that. It may also be that it is good enough to strike a chord with an audience.

either way this is harmless… and i do not understand why people want to whinge.

Meh. What a load of fuss about nothing. It doesn't claim to be historically accurate, so it's portrayal of the character doesn't need to reflect history. It's not trying to change history.
