or ‘putting a different perspective on events’ as some might say.

say the play, I, Joan - which
charts the life of the French
patron saint - will "offer the
possibility of another point of
view" when it arrives later this
month.
The lead role will be played by
Isobel Thom, who also uses the
pronouns "they/them".//

The pronoun bit told me everything.
Maid of Orleans or Made in Orleans?
What next? All female adaptation of The Crusades?

what a load of Horse cack, I wonder what future generations will make of this period in their history.
‘ Sophie Walker tweeted: "When I was a little girl, Joan of Arc presented thrilling possibilities about what one young girl could do against massed ranks of men. Rewriting her as not female and presenting it as progress is a massive disappointment.’

To be fair, so did The Wizard of Oz.

How do we know Joan of Arc wasn’t the C15th equivalent of non-binary?
They will be remaking I, Claudius next with Sandi Tocsvig.
Just another high-spirited tomboy who never got the chance to bloom.
Well, it’s nice of you to finally come out, doooogie.
isn't the phrase "non binary" itself discriminatory? We are told there's a gazillion sexes so surely "binary" meaning only two is wrong.
//"That is the role of theatre: to simply ask the question 'imagine if?'."//

IK, I've imagined. Now what?

Excellent idea.

Might actually pop along and see it.
While I greatly admire what Joan of Arc did, I have to say child safeguarding.
What were the French social workers thinking?
i don’t see what the harm in this is at all… it is a work of art about a long-gone historic figure… it doesn’t remove all the previous ones or tamper with the historical record. It is fiction.
Indeed Untitled...and this representation doesn't detract from any of the others. For instance, Dreyer's 'Passion of Joan of Arc' will always be the classic version and I don't recall people reassessing Bob Dylan after Cate Blanchett's performance as him in I'm Not There.

Or even David Suchett as Lady Bracknell in The Importance of Being Earnest (which I saw, and he was pretty good in actually).

This story seems designed to give the use crowd the vapours.
Why is it an ‘excellent idea’?

Generates interest in the play. I would never have heard of it. Only this week there was that story about the Fat Controller and Dick Turpin - unlike this one they smelled a bit fake but publicity is publicity.

And if Isobel Thom‘s performance is anywhere near as good as Cate Blanchett or David Suchett - winning!

And the point about Shakespeare makes alot of sense.

….or pandering to the wokery that seems all-pervading in 21st century.
Won’t be long before we get Hitler: The Musical or Hungerford through the interpretation of dance.
I don’t believe that it generates ‘interest is the play’ is the reason you think it’s an excellent idea. What’s your real reason?
Fatticusinch

You may indeed be right - but I think this is an example of the usual suspects looking for something to mess themselves over.

Either the play will be a success which means the Globe were thinking along the right lines in staging it, or it’ll be a disaster and this idea won’t be tackled again.

Whatever happens people with voted with their cheque books.
…or rather some other payment system - who uses cheques!!!
