I was talking to a girlfriend of my deceased brother last night in the local mall. With all her health issues last night was the first she was out in 3 years anyway she was talking about her sister in law who is actually my second cousin but was saying she was getting her knee done in Dublin.

So I knew this woman had a new knee because I spoke to her some 3 years ago and of course I asked - oh is this the other knee.

No she said - that time she got it - hospital just put a knee cap on and so she was having surgery at the sides of knee and back. Jesus wept.

They did go private - apparently it was £12,000. She paid £6,000 and the NHS paid the other half - something to do with this cross border treatment - I have heard of it before.

Anyway can anybody explain - what are they doing to her. Never heard of this in my life.

PS - Sorry for being so verbose LOL

sorry Chris for misunderstanding - I am asking the question of what are they doing or have done to her knee. Not interested in the money bit.

There are many forms of surgical treatment for OA of the knee which does not include total knee replacement.
I am out of my comfort zone here but telescopic washouts of the knee, partial knee replacements are also available but not with as good results as total replacement.

That's it from me I'm afraid.
PS: I came across this video the other day and bookmarked it so that I could include it on one of your 'dodgy knees' threads. I hope that you'll find it useful. (I've deliberately chosen not to embed it here, but to give you a link that will take you to YouTube instead, as it will then allow you to easily click on the 'Subtitles' button if you feel that they might help you):

well thanks Sqad - then maybe she got a partial knee replacement 3 or 4 years ago and she is getting some other kind of surgery.

Question Author
ok thanks Chris - looked at that and I will peruse it tomorrow as I am a little exhausted with talking too much LOL

Scroll down to 'Kneecap replacement', under 'Other procedures', here:

JJ....your explanation sounds quite reasonable.
