They were able to retreat to their homes, no more travelling to work and they could stay their whilst other poor sods who were not able to do likewise fetched and carried...

But of course you don't need to spend too much on gas and leccy when you're sitting on your veranda sipping a Pina Colada (or is it a Tequila Sunrise?), do you gully? Spare a thought for us poor sods back here in Blighty, spending a fortune trying to keep warm. :-)
