You'll have to look at the Police & Criminal Evidence Act ("PACE") part IV, Section 37, dave. This explains the duties of a police custody officer before charge and outlines the circumstances where a person accused of a criminal offence may be denied bail. Considering whether he would or would not disappear is not a requirement.

That appears to be who the accused is. A homeless illegal immigrant with no fixed abode or traceable contacts is likely to be granted bail and after a determined representation from legal aid "lawyers" acting on his/her behalf. If on the other hand the accused happens to be a middle aged, white, male accused of an identical offence he will be detained pending further investigation. His pc, phone, and smart watch will be confiscated, his name and picture will be released to the press and his accuser will get a 2 week holiday in The Seychelles, paid for by the CPI. Obvs. only the last bit is true. The rest was a skit.

No he hasn't. And that's the problem. If he had, he would be subject to the 1976 Bail Act. This provides for an assessment of the likelihood of him absconding (among other things).

That said, I don't think I'm particularly easy with the idea of people who have not been charged with any offence being denied bail.

cashier, I thought they were living in slum camps designed for a thousand and now contining a few thousand, and only supposed to be there for a few days while their asylum applications were considered, which I have seen on the news lately. Have you got anything to support your assumption?
