I think that the lady was asking where her family originated from. I think that is a genuine question, maybe not the time nor the place but it is hardly a major issue.

Atheist - // You call her 'the culprit', and then go on to suggest characteristics she might have. Would you accuse an autistic person of being unempathetic, or a 'senile' person of being unacceptable? //

Yes, characteristics she 'might have' - being offered in her defence.

To be fair to the lady herself, she possesses the obvious awareness of the offence she caused, and has had the wit and grace to apologise and resign her position, I doubt, if she was either autistic or senile, that she would be aware enough to do either, or both.

I doubt she is either autistic or senile, but then again, I'm not defending her.

Should either characteristic be advised in future reports, I will be happy to adjust my position accordingly, but my observations, as always, are based on what is known at the time of writing.

If you are offended on her behalf, there is name for that.
jourdain - // Absolutely right O_G! I would probably have asked, out of polite interest, where the lady and her family originated, given that her name is not English. Storm in a teacup.
I come from Yorkshire - and we always like to know if the person we are speaking to, if not Yorkshire, is from Lancashire or other points North or South. This is really a very stupid witch-hunt. //

If you really imagine that one white northern person asking another white northern person which county they are from, equates to someone making a bigoted assumption based on skin colour, and then pressing the point beyond appalling rudeness, even when a response has been given, then I suggest you are entirely missing the point.
Old_Geezer - // Like many things, one needs to ascertain the intent and to tolerate with good humour actions or words for which one isn't in favour but where no offence is likely to be meant. //

As I have opined already - just because no offence is 'meant' does not excuse it in the slightest.

Not 'meaning' something does not negate it - if it did, then every person who ran over a stranger in the street would find their victim uninjured, because they meant no personal harm.

That's not how the world works, and simply passing this off as some harmless old lady from 'another time' does not acknowledge what this was - appalling bad manners from someone more than old enough, and wise enough, to know better.

Wrong things do not become right because we decide it doesn't really latter.

The lady in question has had the humility not to try and defend her actions, maybe the majority on here should take a leaf out of her book.
I’ve listened to this woman’s account on LBC now. The lady-in-waiting moved her hair to read her name badge!!!

This was before the questioning.

So wrong.
A good thing Gary Lineker wasnt there. As a BAME individual he said he was often racially abused.
Moving her hair to read her.badge is not racist, it’s just plain rude.

I don’t see what’s racist in asking about heritage. I’ve done it because I’m interested. There’s no shame in heritage but complaints of this nature belie that. I think it’s called shooting yourself in the foot. I do, however, regard the complainant addressing the ‘offender’ as ‘lady’ as aggressive - because it is. That’s rough. Credibility fail.
ynnafymmi, I have seen that Gary Lineker had been a target of racial abuse because of his relatively darker skin but where have you seen he comes from a minority ethnic group?
Naomi - The lady did not ask about "heritage" at all.

She asked a rude question, and became successively more offensive when not receiving an answer couched in the terms of reference she felt she was entitled to.

To dress it up as an 'enquiry about heritage' is to sprinkle glitter on canine waste, with a similarly redundant result.
I dont know,TCL.He claimed he was racially abused on the pitch.I took it he was being racially abused by non-whites.So he isnt BAME then,he is a white Caucasian.Just like Michael Jackson?
AH, asking where someone comes from isn’t rude: in this instance the answer wasn’t understood - but that doesn’t make it racist. Just unclear. I say again this is a fuss over nothing,
Naomi - It's less that it 'wasn't understood', more that it was in the wrong format.

The LIW clearly sees black people as only ever having a non-British heritage and lineage, and therefore rudely pressed her fellow guest to confirm her 'origins' in a way she would never dream of doing with a white woman.

You and I are obviously never going to agree on this, I am happy to leave our exchange here if you are.
You had better adjudicate between me and TCL,Andy.Gary Lineker-Caucasian or non-Caucasian?
AH, //You and I are obviously never going to agree on this, I am happy to leave our exchange here if you are. //

You leave it there if you want to. I'll continue to post my opinions.
Why is it so bad to ask about the origin of a person? I don't get these modern day hysterics over a simple enquiry.
It's potty, TTT.
TTT - It's not rude to ask, but when answered, and then to carry on and on because you don't like the answer you received - that is rude.
Naomi at 9 21 - I made it clear that I suggested only that you an I cease exchanging directly because our views are opposed and unlikely to be changed.

I did not suggest that you stopped posting - my post is perfectly clear, you should know, you copied it into your response, maybe you should pop back and have another look
AH, I looked. If you want it left, leave it.
I saw it as someone being interested in her cultural background due to her dress and then name and the presumption that her family origins were not from this country. Its not racist in my opinion but the woman lost all credibility with me when in the interview she said the LIW 'aksed' her where she came from. Can't believe all the air time this is getting. She is now claiming it was abuse!
Naomi - having pointed out your error, I am happy to cease my exchange with you on this thread.

Acknowledgement of your error would be courteous, but I know better than to expect it.
