I think that the lady was asking where her family originated from. I think that is a genuine question, maybe not the time nor the place but it is hardly a major issue.

What on earth does this have to do with the original situation?

It looks alarmingly like Lady Hussey's defenders are trying to engineer a scenario where the victim is such a bad person that she effectively got what she deserved.

That is a disgusting attitude.
maybe if you make a big show of your ethnicity you shouldn't be surprised or offended when people ask you about it?
I said pretty much that yesterday, Dave. Furthermore, for someone who works with abused women - only black ones mind - to claim that this alleged conversation amounts to abuse, as she has, is disgraceful.

So it's not possible to be proud of your heritage whilst also being British-born and a British citizen?
has anyone said otherwise?
Davebro - No-one is suggesting that Lady Hussey's interest in the party guest was not genuine, or appropriate.

The issue arose when she refused to accept the guest's first response to the question about her origin.

Question - where are you from?

Answer - London.

No problem.

Further questions - Where are you really from? Where are 'your people' from?

Rudeness and offence.

Not, as I have pointed out from my first Answer to this one - racism, or an 'attack', simply crass rudeness.
I don't live in the world that some on here do, the sound of eggshells crunching under foot must be annoying.
Douglas - it's not a matter of 'eggshells', it's a matter of manners.

When someone tells you where they are from, and you give the impression that you think they are lying, that's nothing to do with eggshells, and everything to do with bad manners.
I think an 83 year old woman rather clumsily expressed an interest in the background of someone who obviously stood out from the norm and the conversation has been blown up out all proportion to the extent that it is now labelled "abuse" by some. Ridiculous.
Eggshells, end of. x
Dave, //it is now labelled "abuse"//

Ngozi Fulani, as she's taken to calling herself, has claimed she's been 'abused'.
I would agree that Ms Fulani assessment of rudeness as being 'assault' is entirely inappropriate, and dilutes the meaning of that emotive term.

But I maintain that digging for negativity about her does not detract from the cause of this thread.

I remain mistfyed by the apparent desire of some posters to gleefully dig up negative aspects of Ms Fulani's life and career.

It appears to infer that in some way this mitigates what occurred.

It does not, in my view.
Astonishing what a bit of digging can dig up. Bet she's not happy about it either. All her efforts too.
I still think that any organisation that excludes other races is racist in itself. Therefore Ms Headly's organisation is racist. I do not condone the reported behaviour and method of questioning by the LIW but if this is considered to be abuse then I must consult my dictionary more.
"Sistah Space will also use the grant to launch a training programme aimed at giving organisations and individuals a greater awareness of cultural sensitivities and barriers faced by domestic abuse survivors who are of African and Caribbean heritage."

She was hardly giving the LIW a greater awareness was she? She could easily have explained the cultural sensitivities when asked about her heritage.

The role of Lady Hussey was to assist the Queen Consort in welcoming the guests, and making them feel comfortable, given that almost all of them will never have been in the presence of royalty before, and will be nervous and worried about conducting themselves correctly.

As my post at 08.35 points out, Lady Hussey was anything but welcoming and encouraging the guest to relax!
Lankeela, that would have been the sensible thing to do.
Yeah but some people are touchier than others. You see it here on AB all the time.
naomi - // Lankeela, that would have been the sensible thing to do. //

And she may have done it, had she not been steamrollered by a rich and privileged old lady intent on securing unnecessary and intrusive heritage information, in advance of anything like courteous conversation.

That's the way with the upper classes - establish the pecking order before anything else.
‘Touchy’ is one word for her, atheist. There are others.
