Boris Johnson
Here is my promised educational piece on that well known liar, Boris Johnson and the Privileges Committee Inquiry.
Something that amazes me about this is that Boris’s expensive lawyers (defending him) are paid for by you and me. Imagine if you or I were accused of serious wrongdoing by our employer – I doubt very much that they would stump-up our defence legal costs – but there you go, the privilege of being a crooked MP (or PM).
You might think that the committee is full of low-life Labour MPs who have got it in for Boris but no, the majority are from his own party.
What might to get Johnson slung out of parliament is not that he lied to parliament (there can be no doubt that he lied), but that once he had been told he had lied (to parliament) he failed to correct the record at the earliest opportunity (as required by the ministerial code).
Of course, should the Privileges Committee find him guilty and recommend a punishment – that punishment has to be voted on by the House of Commons – so Boris may try to persuade them to let him off (despite being found guilty), but this will look bad on them, letting another Tory crook off the hook.
