Do you remember the Pitchfork case some years ago?
Two young girls had been murdered and the police arrested a suspect. After long interrogation he confessed and, curiously, there were details in his confession 'that could only have been known to the killer', and, of course, the police.
DNA evidence, used for the first time, showed that he was innocent.
Eventually the real killer was caught and convicted.
So, there are times when a police officer is convinced that the suspect is guilty and twists the evidence to convince the court.
Who would want some executed on the word of a bent copper?

I would argue there is certainty, not as Jno says “never” yes sometimes there is doubt and some other remedy would apply. I fear that recidivists will be incarcerated , and then let loose to do it again, plenty of evidence there, I think . I am simply saying that in cases where there is no doubt E.g. rigby et al, then it should be applied
//Fortunately, we are a civilised society, so the question is not likely to arise.//
Unfortunately, we are anything but civilised, so the question will always arise. Even worse, and and shows we are no better.... we will literally lock a person underground alone forever in a glass cage- rather than the euthanasia they request.
I personally wouldn't go with hanging, but lethal injection probably... although I am always a little baffled, that we can't do it quickly and painlessly, because pharmacies only want their drugs used for animals and why they have that much power.

Because someone is either found "guilty" or not. There are no in betweens.
It is incredibly hard to convict anyone anyway, as it has to be "beyond reasonable doubt". It isn't 50/50 likelihood- but has to be totally proven with evidence. By that alone- there are far, far more people being wrongly acquitted, than wrongly sentenced.
But, if you are not sure enough- why would you imprison them even?

"...why does it have to be hangmen or women..."
Availability, cost, reliability, adaptability in a crisis, work ethic, probably a few more.
It's a pointless argument, it's not going to happen.
Just because our leaders are happy to deal with countries who execute criminals doesn't mean they have the 'nads to reintroduce it here.
