The "Special Relationship".......................
46 Answers
..............myth continues with the visit of President Biden. There is, and never was, any "Special Relationship". It only exists in the minds of deluded people who think the UK is still a world power.
The myth started when Germany declared war on the USA following the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese. This meant that the USA and the UK were now allies and as such, would make the joint effort against Germany and Japan (not forgetting Italy). It also meant the sharing of intelligence. Churchill was reluctant to let anyone know about Ultra and Bletchly Park, including the Americans. In the end, he was persuaded to let them in on it. That was the start of the, so-called, Special Relationship. There was no other reason for this "relationship", other than to defeat the Axis Forces. The only "relationship" the UK has to the USA is that they are both members of NATO.
There was never any kindred spirit towards the UK from the USA. In fact, in 1934, in the midst of world economic turmoil and depression, the USA formulated a plan that might involve a war between them and the British Empire. It was called War Plan Red and would have commenced with the invasion of Canada and British held territories in the Carribean.
Special Relationship my armpit! :o)

Yeah I was surprise to read - "what is a tankie den? yeah wha'?"
when it is on wiki
1956 Hungary - lucky hungarians returned from terms of imprisonment in Russia ( war crimes etc, usually ten years in a labour camp)
and found.... nothing had changed since 1945.
result, riots and the tanks rolled in ( post Stalin)
tankies saying - yeah - right on, all power to Stalin's ( successors') elbow.
Never a clearer example of - "what dat den? foo!" being a limp one line retort.
Later when the tanks rolled into Prague in 1967, "Once a communist state, always a communist state" (so force can be used to maintain it) became the Brezhnev doctrine
and everyone said yeah OK, got it
and then there was eventually Ukraine

it depends, Atheist. Eisenhower was invited to join in the Suez venture; one of the reasons he didn't was that he'd worked with British generals in the war and didn't trust them. (Rightly, as it turned out for Suez). Whereas Thatcher managed to persuade a reluctant Regan that Britain was doing the right thing re Argentina. Personal opinons may seldom be vital but they count when a country is assessing who its friends are.

I’ve not seen any tankies on here. Generally there are two types of apologist for Russia: the far leftist who really does it these days because he hates NATO and the US.
And far rightist who thinks that Putin runs the country the right way what with all this anti-LGBT stuff and that the west is simply weak.
And also hates Nato and the US.
Disappointing to hear Sunak’s implied criticism if the DPICMs. I discovered there’s a clause in the anti-cluster munitions thing those countries signed which actually says they agree that the US can help them out with these weapons if need be.
So either no one has bothered to read that. Or the whole declaration is ridiculous.
Or both

Thanks for all the replies folks. As well as being a left wing, communist fifth columnist, I can now add "tankie" to the list! ;o)
I don't believe there is any "Special Relationship", and there never was. I bet half of America doesn't even know where the UK is. They probably think the UK is some Pacific island country.
Someone mentioned reparations, earlier. Whilst there is this outcry about reparations for slavery and colonialism, everyone forgets the abominable way this country treated its' own people for hundreds of years in the mills, factories, on the farms and in the mines, where it was virtually slave labour. And the result now is Fiona Bruce on Antiques Roadshow insulting us by showing the ancestral home of an historically successful business family who probably gained all their wealth from the exploitation and subjugation of working people. These places should be demolished and the lands used to build housing, hospitals etc.
How's that for a Tankie? :o)
