One life gone another ruined. What's the answer? We all carried knives when I was their age, I don't remember anyone getting stabbed.

There are other things that are just as dangerous as knives surely, like sharp scissors or razor blades, broken glass etc. Etc, etc.  The fact is these feral kids will find something.

I read an article this morning from one of the national newspapers published in 2010 saying that knife crime was worse in the 60s that in 2010 - is the OP saying that since 2010 knife crime has increased significantly?

Well I was a teenager/early 20s in the60s and out and about in London and other towns  I don't remember much knife crime.  I felt quite safe.  I don't remember much gang culture either and I wasn't a sheltered young person, I mixed with all sorts and felt quite safe.

And I still think decent penalties a) prevents the reoffending and b) it will over time be a deterrant to a fair few.

True it will never be 100% but if your looking at 5 years min for carrying and it is handed out many wont want to risk that.

Problem is it needs a Police Force and we dont have one.

I suppose you are picking on me again ymf.  My husband was a  mod he tells me.  I mixed with mods, rockers, hippies etc.  Our local town had a large immigrant population areas Of course there was some violence, but it doesn't compare to what is happening now.  

As for your statement about guns........

That's the difference. They were carried as tools. You wouldn't dream of using one on a person. Nowadays they are carried as weapons.

I don't know your age Ttt, but yes knives were carried for good reason.  In fact hubby still carries one around.  Comes in handy  when he's outside in the garden and woods and inside for all sorts of things!

Which is exactly why tough sentences are required. The violent yet  'undeterrable' need to be kept out of circulation for as long as possible.

Sadly though we have neither the facilities or the will to build them, unless by private companies who are even more useless than our rulers.
