So what was the Israelis hoping to gain by financing Hamas?Was this some sort of"trading agreement",we support you financially,you dont attack us?Doesnt seem to have worked.

their goal was to prevent the gaza strip from unifying politically with the palestinian authority and therefore to sabotage the outcome of the oslo accords which provided a path to a two-state solution. they were willing to tolerate occasional rocket attacks and mini-wars in pursuit of this goal - the casualties from these being considered an acceptable tradeoff. they did not consider hamas capable of an attack on the scale of october 7th until it happened.
