legend (and others), only two people have been to court over this, if I'm reading the report correctly; one's been found guilty, one's pleaded guilty. The rest - many of them not in Britain - have yet to be given their say. So I'm going to wait until they have been. It's the law.

If you are saying that you think that gays and lesbians are 'no better' than paedophiles, I'd appreciate an explanation of where you're coming from, because as a gay man myself, I could never ever look at a child as anything more than an expensive noisy thing who is the reason why Spongebob Squarepants is popular.

So, please - could you tell me why I should see gay men as potential paedophiles.

After reading infundibulum's first two posts again, in the cold light of day (although it's not really that light right now), I think I know where he or she is coming from.

To paraphrase - are you saying that because there is a market for paedophile material, someone somewhere will supply that market?

I don't think you're actually saying that you support the existance of the market, but you acknowledge it's there, and if a 'want' exists, there will always be a 'supply'.

Is that right?

I thought what Infundibulum was saying is that the www could be more effectively policed but this would result in some ISP loosing money if they refused to allow paedophiles sites to operate. This being unacceptable the god of filthy lucre must be worshiped even if this does result in children being abused. We have many examples of where the wealth production for the powerful minority are privileged over the well being of the less powerful majority. I think the point to Legend was that Legend was missing the point and by doing so assumed that Infundibulum was in favor of paeophillia when in fact (s)he was just providing an analysis for the continuance of such abuse in the context of the Internet, when it could be stopped. But I might be wrong as Infundibulum's more recent posts have become a little more obscure and oblique to me.

I think your analysis is spot on, and I can actually see the point at which infundibulum's point was missed and the whole thread went off on a tangent.

My guess is that the police don't actuallyy want to close down paedophile sites because, like with Operation Ore, it's better to wait until paedophiles have signed up to the site, and given their credit card numbers, before swooping on them and launching prosecutions.

That makes more sense than shutting the sites down I suppose.

I have been told in the past that I am sympathetic towards paedophiles simply because I stated that I believe they are mentally ill, need proper medical help, and certainly not the death penalty as mentally ill people should not be put to death.

pippa68 - I feel branding them all as 'mentally ill' is clouding things. Yes, there must be something wrong with them - 'normal' people (for want of a better word) do not get turned on by pictures of naked children, and as for signing up to see live video links of poor terrified kids being systematically abused and raped by grown-ups, the mind boggles.

However, I fear a sympathetic approach will have them laughing all the way to the psychiatrist. This isn't mental illness in the sense of people who wander down the road talking to themselves and swearing at pigeons. Many of these people are outwardly 'normal' (there's that horribly insensitive word again) - perfectly capable of seeming charming to outsiders, holding down respectable jobs as lawyers, bankers, (heaven forbid) teachers and so on. Many of them are fiendishly clever in hiding their little 'hobby' from friends and loved ones. They know full well what they are doing, but don't care about the effects. We need to accept that some people are just evil.

One big worry I have is that they are not only creating victims, they are also potentially creating future paedophiles. Many school bullies have been victims of bullying themselves, how many of today's paedophile victims are going to grow up thinking this is an acceptable way to behave towards children? I'm not making an excuse for them - after all, many people go through some kind of childhood trauma and come out of it as well-rounded adults, but if anyone needs help, it's the victims. Rescuing the kids in that ring was great, but they now need as much counselling and support as they can get.

i also think that infun going on about market forces etc thopugh looking like its a very sensible and intellectual opinion.its probably similar to some of the excuses used in court in defence.
