I have been on here a few years and found that people who post rarely reveal personal details. Sometimes you don't even know what sex regular contributors are. I know sp is gay, but I don't think that was disclosed for quite a while. AOG is a 79 year old ex-librarian, and that is about my knowledge of other posters.
Then, curiously in the same thread, two posters with remarkably similar views start revealing personal stuff about themselves:
dfward's biog - he is gay, lives in Wensleydale and had a triple stroke 4 yrs ago.
and
leewayne's biog - female, a 20 year old model who travels a lot in this country.
Hmmmm....?

Ah - the 1950s.
Let's just prick that little bubble for a second.
If you were a woman and been in the unfortunate position of being raped and got pregnant. Forget about a termination...unless of course you wanted to go down a back street abortionist.
If you worked for a company and suffered an industrial accident, forget about compensation mate!
If you were working class and you wanted to go university? Ha ha ha...get back to coal pit.
If you wanted to go abroad, broaden your horizons...no no no...you get back to that hop picking.
I'm guessing that quite a few of us don't remember the 50s, but I've known a few people who were there at the time.
Don't kid yourself that everything was like an episode of Miss Marple.
Of course it was for some people....but if you were your average working man, you had to do without something that all of us take for granted now...choice.
In everything.

The reason I expressed disbelief that dfward could possibly be gay and racist is that it's...it's oxymoronic...kinda like 'Charlton Athletic'.
In all my time, I've never, ever heard of a gay racist because the vast majority of gay people I know have lived through a time when they were the people demonised by society.
I'm sure there will be some younger gay men and lesbians growing up who reap the benefits of the world we've fought for who don't apreciate what it was like in the 70s. They could turn out to hold racist views, but it's still shocking.
It's like a deaf person having issues with blind people.
Poor analogy, but I hope you see what I'm getting at.

You say you are not racist, but the post you started was racist in content/meaning, and without any sign of irony, it can only be assumed you are racist.
I think China Doll pointed out if your purpose was to generate a debate, you could have done so, many people here just love them, but his can be done without recourse to such any ugly and questionable stratagem.

BBC News ran an article tonight reporting that 1/3 of Asians in London do not regard themselves as British. They could have reported that 2/3 therefore DO.
I don't like this term 'British Asian' because to me it says 'I am British but wish to emphasize a difference'
It is racist and should be abolished from the language. If you are British, then you are British and welcome. If you were born in Hackney then you are British, unless of course it suits you to be different.... ? For whatever reason.

Are you laying the blame of all societies ills at immigrants?
If so, could you please explain the crime levels in say, Glasgow - an area of Britain that has an extremely low level of immigration from...well, who would you like to blame?

What does RACIST mean ? It is a word much bandied about on here, it is the universal get-out clause and all-purpose shield. To me racism implies an unreasoned dislike. What however if it is reasoned ? If I am aware that a certain section of the community is overwhelmingly responsible for gun and knife crimes, is my disaffection unreasoned ? No it isn't. However, I know that a group of black youths is less likely to harm me out of the blue than a group of chavvy whites (oi mate yer wheel's going round, got 20p for the phone mate), so consequently I am more cautious of whites than blacks. It's not about skin colour, it's about social behaviour.

My history teacher gave me this definition over 20 years ago and this is the way I still see it.
We all have racial prejudices. If I see a Chinese child on television, I automatically assume they will be clever.
If I ever talk to someone from India, I'll assume that they are hard working and family oriented.
The list goes on...but what I mean is that we have certain views of people which are informed by our experiences.
That's racial prejudice. Not necessarily a bad thing...it's just 'social shorthand'.
Racism is where you take your racial prejudices and act upon them in a negative way regarding the race that you come in contact with.
She was a fantastic history teacher...right up until she slept witb a lad from the upper sixth form.
Then she 'went to work in a school in the country' (according to our school newspaper).

I think you've got the wrong end of the stick. I wasn't talking about the 50's in terms of choice/pregnancy/and so forth was I, but the fact we had no or very few immigrants then. Of course nothing is ever perfect, but that has nothing to do with the central issue here of foreigners in this Country and the mass emigration of British born and bread. I was talking about a Country that suffered less crime and had better standards those that have been introduced and influenced by immigration. Do you not think that a culture of crime and violence that seems to be prevalent in certain communities can easily spread to others as in Glasgow.

'prejudice' sounds like a bad word, but it really isn't.
It literally means, 'to prejudge'...we do it all the time. You may prejudge something positively, or negatively. We all walk around with these prejudices in our head. There are those who act on them (negatively) and those, who I consider enlightened who put their prejudices back in the cupboard and deal with people as individuals.
A true racist will only ever associate the bad that they see in a race and apply it across the board (scrounging, drug peddling, workshy, gun-toting foreigners etc).

You wrote:
People went about their lives peacefully, could leave their doors open, children played in the street without problems etc etc. Then the powers that be decided to let a whole bunch of foreigners in and standards went down.
I assume then that you place the blame for Britain's downfall squarely at the feet of foreigners.
Which foreigners in particular?
You got on go say:
So here we are today, overpopulated with foreigners, crime, child molesters, drugs, ASBO's,lack of manners, residents who can't even speak the language of "their" Country. Need I go on?
I think I'm right in saying that you blame immigrants for every ill suffered by the country from the 50s onwards.
Am I reading you right?
I'm not having a go...I just want you to clarify your position.
