so home secretary jacqui smith is to launch a ''shock'' tactic and get the authoroties to take thugs who carry knives to hospitals and show them the effects that a knife inflicts on a victim,is this the best they can do to tackle the problem?...its laughable....does she think that these thugs will even bother to turn up?..a zero tolerance approach is needed....or else we will see more news of people being stabbed to death in the uk...and i mean the carrying of a knife in a public place is a mandatory 5 year jail sentence...end of story....

This link may have some relevance to this thread, when looking at the moral and ethical values of our society.
So our Jacqui thinks by appealing to the heart of the finer inner man, she will cure this problem? Well, she's going to have to dig pretty deep to find a heart that is more than stone, so I doubt she'll come across a trace of compassion. Yet another useless, money-wasting, pathetic idea from this ridiculously hopeless government - and yet more pussyfooting around. They just don't get it, do they? One has to wonder what they use for brains!
all that would happen is the kids will start boasting of what similiar injuries they've inflicted to blah blah blah, even big sentences aint going to help,we have to deal with these issues BEFORE they happen by tackling it in the communitys,schools and the parents, as opposed to clearing up the mess after the dissaster's already happened! prevention's always better then the cure!

When the police tried handing out lollipops to people coming out of pubs it helped cut crime and disorder.
But most people would poo poo it as a ridiculous idea.

Work with offenders does demonstrate that lack of empathy and understanding that there are consquences to actions/behaviour all contribute to people being able to committ offences. People who have offended in the past and have stopped, describe how they failed/were unable/unwilling to imagine the impact of thier behaviour on thier victim and the victim family. Criminiolgists and those who work with offenders have known for a long time that making offenders face up to the impact of thier offences, contributes to stopping offending.
But, lets not try something that has a degree of sucess, instead lets continue with the failing system we have. That will keep the moaners far happier.

The problem with so-called experts is that many of them find excuses for the way these kids behave, but no amount of excuses excuses this behaviour. These are hardened teenagers - thugs - who don't care who they hurt - and I can't see how appealing to their better nature - if you can find a better nature within them - will help. I watched an interview with an ex-gang member on TV yesterday, and he admitted that there is no deterrent, and that's why these kids continue to do what they do. They laugh at society and they laugh at the law. We've had so-called experts sending young criminals on Caribbean holidays - in effect rewarding them for their behaviour - but what good has it done? We've had years of the soft approach, but since the situation is getting worse, that quite clearly doesn't work, so perhaps it's time we tried it the other way by making it perfectly clear that life isn't cheap and that they will face severe consequences for their actions. We have to say enough is enough - and if that means getting tough with more police and more prisons, then so be it. There are plenty of kids who don't behave anti-socially or commit crime, but for those who do, it's their choice, and it's high time they were made to realise that this cannot be allowed to continue. Realistically, I can't see any other way of stopping them - but of course, I'm no expert.

Secondly, it's like speeding. Some areas have trialled schemes such as having to talk to school children.
This has had some positive feedback from people not speeding in certain areas.
Locally, a school has had trouble with parents / grandparents parking outside the school gates in dangerous places. The children firstly drew pictures which hung on the railings and then asked all the people picking their children up to come in for a play which they enacted the death of one of the students.
This has had an amazing effect and there are no problems at the school any more.
A lot of people were saying that the police should set up there and issue parking tickets.
The way that the problem has been cured is by talking to people and changing their attitudes. This (in my opinion) is better than being purely dictatorial.
We need to change the attitude of these teenagers, and I believe that this could be a good way.

Show a group of smokers the lungs of a person who has died from lung cancer - whils't it may not have any effect on some , it will however , more than likely cause some to have a long hard look at their activities , and cause them to reconsier their actions
No political party has the solution to the problem - the tories if they win the next election , isn't going to stop it , as some on here think .

They didn't. The government slowly educated people that it was not acceptable, and now it is pretty self policing in that if you were down the pub with your friends and had had a few drinks, they would try to talk you out of driving.
They are doing the same thing with smoking. It is now much more anti social to smoke than it ever used to be. Partly this is down to pricing, but a lot of it is also down to education.
