It has been reported today that if you claim Child Benefit, you are to receive a payment of 150 (courtesy the taxpayer) to help with energy bills. So if you have children, it doesn't matter how much you earn, apparently you will get this money! When are the middle earners with no children going to get a break? My husband is on a good wage and we manage OK, but I am disabled and, apart from DLA, don't get any other help. Is this a payment fair?

Why is there a payment at all?

I don't have a link Ethel. It was on the Wright stuff this morning though.

Conversation overheard on a train apparently Ethel http://news.scotsman.com/politics/Browns-150-r ebate-on-energy.4375813.jp

cant see it somehow. Im a mother and i wouldnt think it fair as everyone needs to keep warm. children and most adults can put on extra clothing, exercise more, babies need more blankets etc. The elderly are the ones that need the payments.

If its purely to help with the rising fuel bills that we are all experiencing then perhaps itd be best giving it to all homes based on their size (a reduction in council tax may help there rather than handing out payments)
heaven help us

So because I don't have kids my energy bills haven't increased.

I'd far rather see the Gov do something about rising fuel costs to all!!!

I'm a mother of 2 and even though I love a 150 cheque, I do think it's unfair!

It's probably a bit of spin the Gov, is trying to claw back public support!
Child beneift as a universal, non means tested has as a central aim

a support for all children redistributes resources to those with additional costs, to the time in the lifecycle when extra is needed, and to the next generation. And it shows the value society places on children, not just as an investment but also in their own right

If you don't have children you don't have the same additional costs, so do not have the same needs for support.
ruby, it costs as much to keep a house warm no matter how many people are in it.

It could be argued a disabled person with limited mobility needs more heating, and could need to do a lot more washing.

Ruby, Having children is an indiviual's choice, and one should not expect the rest of the taxpayers, to help in supporting them.

Much better to give any spare money out, to the hard done by wage earners of this country.
Ethel

I realise that other section of the community do have needs. However, the income generated from tax is finite and I certainly don't see that people like me (childless and an earner) should get the 'tax breaks', the scare resource should be spent where it is most needed ie child beneifit, DLA and pension, otherwise the tax might as well not be collected in the first place if all that is going to happen is that it is given back to tax generators.

AOG, I assume your comment is tongue in cheek, otherwise its asinine.
I trust you are not getting a pension paid for by other people's children, oldgit?
and they wonder why some many of the lazy arse stinkers in this country deliberately have children to claim more from the state
it is not children that pay for my pension, it is workers that pay taxes...
Well said!!

I agree with you Raggy Woman. My eldest son has worked non stop since he left school, taken about 1 week in sick over a period of 18 years, he still can't afford anyhwere to live and finds himself doing two jobs to survive. Everyone tells him he would be better off on benefit but he wants to work and it should be the other way round, if you work you should be better off but not by sitting on your ar*e all day.
ruby wont like this...

encouraging the listless and dim to keep on shelling out kids in order to get even more handouts is surely the guaranteed way of ensuring the IQ average of our population is on a further decreasing spiral,

these offspring are going to be hopelessly inadequate at adding value to the economy,

we need quality not quantity,

people with an IQ lower than 90% of average or no job should receive payments for abstention from breeding...

tongue firmly not in cheek.
It should be to the elderly full stop, child benefit should be abolished at the earliest opportunity. We live in a society that promotes mass breeding without thought to consequence. As soon as the tax credits stop, people will make more informed decisions and ensure they are able to support a child/children. 2 p worth firmly added
