as an interesting addendum, while i am at work, my black colleagues are regularly racially abused, but as we are a psych hospital, the response we often get from the police (but not always - occaisionally we get some good guys/gals come out) is that they are mad and they don't know what they are doing (the patients, that is). but, i'm sorry - racism is racism - and i think that people only say that kind of stuff when they are really unwell as their 'true' personality comes out - they are less able to fake it/put on a mask like when they are well.
racism is an ugly thing and papers like the daily mail often perpetuate it by printing their ludacrious headlines about 'those foreigners' or black people. what about all the scummy white wastes of space in this country? far more of them around if you ask me...

Oh no...not the MOBOs thing again.
The MOBOs are specifically targeted at act who produce what was previously called 'Urban music'.
I think in the past, it was actually called the Urban Music Awards.
However, it was changed a few years back, because it was thought too limiting.
It is for music of black origin.
You do not have to be black to be nominated or to win awards.
If you did then Tim Westwood, Amy Winehouse, The Pussycat Dolls and The Streets would never have won.
Can we please put this one to bed, once and for all.
It is not a discriminatory award show.

See my answer below.
Music of black origin can be performed by anyone (e.g. Eminem - another previous nominee).
To call it 'exclusively black' because most nominees are black is to call the Kerrang or Country Music Awards exclusively white, because mostly white acts are honoured.
It's just completely untrue, and another example of the gap between perception and reality.
In fact, I can name about ten high profile white acts that have been honoured at the MOBOs...care to venture the same number at the Kerrang awards?
Does that make the Kerrang Awards inherently racist?
No.
And neither are the MOBOs.
Even Joss Stone has won a MOBO...and she's from Cornwall - one of the whitest counties in the whole of Britain!!!

sp - i get it, love - alright! i was actually referring to the concept of there being a mobo - can't really see a music of white origin award coming up soon (not to mention the anacronym being sh!t). i think the whole issue of highlighting race is discriminatory (for all parties of the community) and divisive and the further we travel down this road, the worse it will get. like the whole pc thing - look where that has got this country. you can't fart these days without fear of offending someone or at least getting fined for it. society is going to hell in a handbasket - and as for highlighting the kerrang awards, at least they make no mention of race. anyone who plays crap metal music is welcome!

But what would MOWO actually be???
MOBO immediately summarises what the awards are all about. If you asked 100 people on the street, what is music of black origin, they would list:
Jazz
Blues
Hip Hop
Soul
R&B
You don't need MOWO because there's a load of well established awards shows which cover each sub category.
In fact, we wouldn't even need that term if, like in the US we had a programme specifically dedicated to music of black origin like Soul Train.
Over there they have the Soul Train Awards...job done.
So tell me - what should the MOBOs be called?
Believe me, me and my mates tried to come up with an alternative a couple of years ago, and none of us could think of one that fits.
You need something that would cover music by Amy Winehouse, Whitney Houston, Dizzie Rascal, The Streets, Joss Stone, Pussycat Dolls, Dionne Warwick, Dr Dre, Lionel Richie and last but not least, the More Fire Crew.
It's impossible.
MOBOs is the only one that fits.

Hi funnygirl.
No not embarrassed about any music. I don't 'own' any of it and all forms of music belong to all people. And following sp1814's post I stand corrected in my perception.
'Music of Black Origin' is responsible for a heck of a lot of the great sounds we have today. I'm just totally against any form of bigotry and to label something according to a creed, colour or race will allow exclusion.

Of course Urban is more limiting than MOBO!!!
Urban refers to dance, garage, grim, hip hop, R&B and rap.
Because Amy and Joss don't fit into any of those categories, the term MOBO is a lot more encompassing.
It then includes blues, jazz, soul, bluegrass etc etc.
Surely you see the difference????

Why, admarlow?
I think the point of them is to set the style of music apart from the crap that Girls Aloud and the Pussycat Dolls churn out.
Should the Blues Music Awards be berated because it is traditionally black music? Isn't that then leaving out the rest of the colours of the world and we should be upset by this??
