They did not commit a crime - but they abused their position and denegrated and upset a person who is held in affection by a lot of people. They overstepped the mark. In any case, as a past fan of Ross, I have found him increasingly boring over the past 12 months or so and will certainly not miss him. If I was as incompetent at my job as these two were I would have been dismissed. Time for a change on Saturday mornings.

I didn't think I would ever say this, but my opinion of Russell Brand has altered, somewhat for the better.

He has 'bit the bullet', made a full apology and much to my admiration has resigned from the BBC.

Whereas that slithering, self-opinionated, excuse for an entertainer, Jonathan Ross has chosen to hide away like the coward he is, and not to resign from his lucrative job at the BBC.

2. Public outcry

3. Blanket newspaper coverage.

4. Comments from Government ministers

5. Resignation/sacking

6. Public enquiry

7. Deluge of complaints in the thousands.

Are you seriously saying that someone wouldn't make a comparison between the two cases?

The only difference is that it's the dailymailers who are up in arms whereas before, they thought the non-dailymailers were over-reacting.

Why cos there was only 2 complaints made after the show. 8 DAYS, yes 8 DAYS after it was broadcast and the Mail decide to run a huge campaign, sorry story on it, people start complaining and a media witch hunt begins.

I am not defending what they did because it was obviously foolish and misguided but the thread question is about the media and the media are creating a feeding frenzy and hype so they have something to sell.

Have you ever wondered why the shows over past 30 odd years that are constantly repeated are the ones that didn't use porn, sex and violence . Many were not politically correct but they limited their remarks to other actors within the show , they didn't attack or humiliate specific people who in many cases are unable to hit back. Today these cowards know that even if they are punished , which is seldom, they will be welcomed back as soon as the fuss dies down. A bit like our politicians. It has been my experience that they good at dishing it out but can't take it when they receive similar treatment.

You've hit on something that crossed my mind the other day.

When I'm 78 years old, I'll be pretty much the same person I am now, but with saggier jowls and a penchant for 'Antiques Roadshow' (which I admit, I already watch regularly).

I absolutely believe that senior citizens should be treated with respect, and personally, I moderate my language when I'm in the company of someone over, say, 60.

However, this story shows that parts of the media are definitely (if not consciously) 'cotton woolling' the elderly, which is bordering on patronisation.

johnny.5 tell you what, give out the home number of one of your elderly relatives and let us have a time when you know they are out and their answerphone is on.

One of us will phone them and say we had sex with one of their relatives, used a condom, laugh a lot, take the mickey out of them, keep phoning back, make jokes about them, apologise whilst singing, but at the same time insulting them and laughing.

I bet you will be laughing won't you when your distraught elderly relative then tells you what happened.

You mention lenient court sentencing. If the BBC hadn't been so lenient in the first place over what it allows onto the airwaves, it wouldn't have happened in the first place.

Interestingly, I saw Graham Norton was up to his old tricks tonight making prank calls on his show. One for you media people to pick up on me thinks.
