If there are between 1/2 million and 1 million illegal immigrants in this country how do they get free schooling, free health and allowed to work? I mean does the government turn a blind eye to their existance?
If so what should the government do about it? Is the process too cumbersome and costly to deal with? Should the burden be placed on the existing population? I wonder how other European countries deal witrh illegals?

I know how Russia deals with its illegals:

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe /russia-tightens-screw-by-starting-to-deport-g eorgian-illegals-419008.html

We don't seem to have the guts to do likewise!
Make it more difficult for them to get in in the first place, which should not be too difficult, after all we are an island.

It makes one wonder how we kept the enemy out during WW2.

I'll address the last part ofyour question: There are illegals in every EU country. In fact, here in Ireland they mostly come through the UK ferries or through the Norn Irn border. Similar to Britain, they are assessed if they register on entry, and per UN rules, if they are in genuine fear of their lives they are granted asylum and eventually, citizenship. (Note that we don't have free healthcare, schooling or anything for anyone.)
If they fail assessment they are deported. If they come in and don't register they are deported. Simple as.
And this is how the US deals with the problem,

The Immigration and Naturalization Service oversaw and enforced the laws that apply to the entry of non-U.S. citizens, referred to as "aliens" or foreign nationals, into the United States. The INS oversaw the legal entry of non-U.S. citizens who are temporarily or permanently settling in the United States, and enforced the laws of naturalization, the process by which a foreign-born person becomes a citizen. The INS also tackled illegal entrance into the United States, preventing receipt of benefits such as social security or unemployment by those ineligible to receive them and investigated, detainined, and deported those illegally living in the United States.
>which should not be too difficult, after all we are an island.

Because we are an island it means that there are hundreds of small beaches and quiet harbours where a boat can easily drop illegal immigrants off.

Also, many illegal immigrants came here "legally" in the first place (on a short term visa or other visa) and just never went home.

Remember the guy from Brazil who was shot by the police on the tube a year or so back.

He has come here on a visa to attend education, and just never went home again.

It is VERY VERY difficult to track down every person who is an illegal immigrant.
its getting way out of hand now something has to give
Too late to do anything about it now, the horse has well and truly bolted
How do illegal immigrants get free health care when they don't have NI numbers???

Also, I don't know if you saw the (very well written) article in the Independent On Sunday a few weeks back, but it would appear that once here, 'Illegals' (dodgy term innit) don't live the life of Riley - they have to go underground. They're the one picking strawberries and living 10 to a room. They're the ones who can be exploited by unscrupulous employers because they have no legal status.

They do it because it's still a damn sight better than where they came from.

It's these employers who need to be hit - in the pocket. The minute you find out that the company who supplies a major supermarket chain is using illegal immigrants as cheap labour - boycott it. Start campaign so that we can stamp out what is effectively modern day slavery.

I mean, what did we do after those poor Chinese cockle pickers died?

Did we stop eating cockles in protest?

Did we do anything?

Nope...too many people just shrugged and said, "Well, they shouldn't have been here".

I think as consumers, we need to take a stand.

Of course, that would mean actually doing something, and I suspect for many, that would be too much effort.

You're right! It requires a great deal of effort which they are not prepared to give.

Interestingly on a radio program yesterday they gave out a survey which showed thew Netherlands to be the most happy people in Europe. Thiis was despite being taxed one of the highest. The reason was all the taxes collected went back to the genuine citizens of that country and there were no freeloaders.
isnt the governments plans to issue id cards a way of trying to locate "illegals"

immigrationas a whole needs to be addressed, i read an article a few weeks back and it has also been mentioned on her before that a lot of financial experts are partly blaming the current financial difficulties on immigrants sending their wages home to their family

I don't we should be too concerned about the European migrants who may be here for work only. Its those that travel from the other side of the world, who often destroy their passports and have no intention of ever returning to their own country.
Face it.....Gov not interested as each one is a vote for Labour.
they cant vote
That's why they'll all get amnesty (whatever its called) and be released before next elections.
terambulan

That's a big leap.

First of all the government would have to get the bill granting amnesty through Parliament.

They have to call an election by June 2009.

They haven't got the time.

I think the government are frightened of losing because of the human rights bill. The illegals are told their rights by well meaning organisations and guess who pays their legal costs and lawyers. Yes you guessed right!
