When I was a kid we used to practice swimming in our pyjamas as part of our lessons. Presumably it was because if you fell into a body of water you would probably be fully clothed.
They were much more difficult to swim in from memory.

I don't see any hygiene issues - after all, pretty much every swimming pool I have ever been to has been urinated in by kids (and some adults!).

That is why they are chlorinated.
More people should be encouraged to wear the burkini. Would eliminate some of the hideous sites one sees at the pool and on the beach in summer.

The other thing to consider is since the ruling states that appropriate swimwear must be worn, and men aren't allowed to swim even in ordinary shorts, should an exception be made for one section of society - in this case rather a glaring exception?
One eyed.

Nonsense. Function of chlorine in pools is bacterostatic or bacterocidal (kills bacteria)

Urine is almost always sterile....i.e no bacteria.
I used to really enjoy piddling in the pool - it was okay as long as one kept on swimming...
Now all these do-gooders and health freaks have put that stuff in pools whereby if a little bit of wee slips out, a blue dye follows you... Very embarrassing. I complained to our local pool manager - he was not sympathetic with my complaint :-(
salla....blimey....don't tell mrs sqad the name of this product otherwise I would be "dead meat"
LOL !!!!!! That's brilliant.

It's really spoilt things for me I must say. If one used to drink plenty of water leading up to the swim, and kept on moving, one could get away with it. No more I'm afraid.

At least I can still pee in peace in my own shower.
There is nothing worse than having to get out of the pool to have a wee.
salla...funny story...our neighbour had the grandchildren and the 7yr old who was in the pool said.."Grandma, I want to wee"

"Don't you dare wee in the pool " grandma retorted, " come out to wee"

Kid climbed out of the pool, turned towards the pool and peed into the pool.

Irate grandma, but kid said "Grandma, you told me to come out of the pool to pee"

Off to snooker now ...bye!

Off to snooker now.
public swimming pools are about as hygienic as public toilets....

why would you use one unless you are absolutely desperate?

doubtless some members of society use a public pool for their 'regular' ablutions.......they have a bath once every three months 'whether they need one or not'

horrible festering places

they are bad enough without people concealing all sorts about their person or using the place as a launderette

I go to the public swimming baths every week and I wear ordinary shorts. No one showers before they enter the pool, there are no showers between the changing area and the pool. No costumes are inspected for cleanliness. That is why the water is filtered and chlorinated. To ban the burkini on hygiene grounds is spurious.

As long as the garment is safe for her and other users, then I do not see any reason why it should not be permitted. Muslims are part of the public and are tax payers like the rest of us, and should get the same services.

I would sooner put up with another user wearing a burkini than have a women only or muslim only session at the baths.
As long as the outfit is made of the type of material associated with swimming pools and not everyday wear, then I would have no problem with it. I would have more problems with people wearing everyday shorts, rather than specific swimming shorts.

Gromit, The French have these rules for the reason they've given. You may swim in shorts, but you wouldn't be allowed to do it in a French pool because the French say that ordinary shorts harbour too much bacteria. I don't know if their public swimming pools are funded by the taxpayer, but if they are, then no one is prevented from using the service as long as they abide by the rules - as they would be obliged to do in any other publicly run area. I swim every day, and personally I wouldn't be at all comfortable swimming with people who are fully dressed simply because I agree with the French - I don't think it's hygienic.
sallabananas, I always thought that was an urban myth. Did it really happen to you?

If so, report it to Snopes
fat lot of good that was, the missing letters, without the full stops, are p.o.o.l.p.i.s.s
Couldn't access the link jno.

However - I was semi-joking. I did used to pee in pools on a very frequent basis - but not since I was about 8! I wouldn't know if the blue dye story is a myth or the truth - but whatever, I bet it's put a lot of people off just in case.....!
Has there been a thread on whether it's fine to allow men to wear swimming shorts at a UK public pool? It's a hygiene issue after all and we're all really concernd about hygiene.

No? Didn't think so. But of course, this is different.

Quinlad, Yes, I guess this is different. I haven't seen anything in the news about men wearing shorts in a uk public pool, but if you can find the appropriate article I'm sure people will be willing to discuss it with you.
