Is it time for a Pol Pot ?

I think I'm older than any other contributors to this site and I've seen all the governments since Churchill's wartime group. Each successive government has got softer, more lenient and more frightened. particularly of the "politically correct " gestapo.
Has democracy had it's day. should we have a Pol Pot or a Stalin ?

how on earth did peace in Northern Ireland line Blair's pockets? Jake's right - he took a course that was genuinely politically dangerous to him, and it succeeded. I'd give him a fiver for that, but he hasn't even asked.

No we don't want any of these monster types forming a Government.

What we do need are people of a more mature age to take charge, people who have some experience of life.

After all don't some of the most primitive tribes of the world, always seek the advice and rule from the "Elders"?

that's because they're primitive, aog. Mature nations like Britain turn to the young and inexperienced to rule them. Kinnock never had a chance, being bald, and I believe Cameron is starting to comb-over.

The idea of appointing 'elders' as leaders probably does work in primitive society when the pace of life is slower and key decisions are few and far between.

With the best will in the world, leading a modern government is far more hectic than that and needs energy and clarity of thought. No offence intended.

Quinlad, I suspect elders are self-appointed. I sometimes wonder if energy really is all that important in actually doing the job, though. If you cut down on the propaganda stuff - spent less time tweeting, appearing on Newsnight, jetting off to Afghanistan and so forth - you'd probably be able to run the country just fine, but then you'd run the risk that the public wouldn't vote for you. Health is no doubt important but 'vigour' less so.... but then I would say that, wouldn't I.

The argument for the old or young is senseless and childish. Idiots come in all ages, as do people with common sense. The best man for the job is the one we should choose, regardless of age. As for opting for a dictatorship such as those suggested, that idea can only have come from someone who has never lived under such a regime.

Isn't it amazing that Blair gets the credit for the entire Northern Ireland peace process - what a miracle that this new Messiah managed to sort everything out from scratch in under 12 months.

Let us all ignore the fact that John Major started the long process in December 1993.
