Anyone would think the Daily Mail Group had extensive TV interests that rival the BBC and are using the veterans and those killed in the far east in a cynical way to boost its own interests.

77% of the population can receive Freeview. When the Switchover is completed in 2012, 98.5% will be able to get it (the same as analogue).

This seems like more BBC bashing for the sake of it. It was broadcast live on the radio.
By the way, the Daily Mail own 20% of ITN. Was VJ day shown live on terrestrial ITV by them? (the answer is no). Bunch of hypocrites.
When I saw the title of this thread, I thought it meant the voluntary sector...
While it would be an absolute travesty if the solidiers who fought in the Far East were forgotten, with all due respect to the issue I really don't think they are...
hmmmm i hope the bbc make up for it. this is unacceptable.
Oh give it a rest Gromit, your continuous Daily Mail bashing is getting to be a bore.

The BBC is the national broadcasting source, therefore they should broadcast occasions such as this, on their main channels

Since there had been many complaints over the BBC's actions, the Daily Mail were in their right to report on it.
Hmmmm....I wonder which channel ITV put it on?

The BBC showed it on BBC News and it featured throughout the day on news bulletins.

It really is a typical Daily Mail BBC-bashing piece of non-news.
Most commemmorations on TV seem to glorify war. Couple this with the war films and you are left feeling gung-ho. War is never like this as proved by the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. Maybe instead of showing coffins being unloaded at Brize Norton the public should witness the body parts laid out. The number of deaths do not do justice to the brutality of each tragedy.
". Maybe instead of showing coffins being unloaded at Brize Norton the public should witness the body parts laid out"

Ehm....

You are joking, right? It sometimes doesn't come of throught he internet 'cause it's just text.
i dislike the BBCm but this is an interim problem.

As usual those that dislike change find anything to moan about.

Odd connection to the anti war retoric on this thread though.
Did the BBC give more prominent coverage to the VE Commemoration? I can't remember.

If they did this does seem wrong. The sacrifices made by the 14th Army, RAF and Royal Navy in the East were just as great, just as significant and just as worthy of remembrance as the campaign in mainland europe.
.
Well said Zeuhl, my lafe Father used to tell us about a visit from "my boss", Mountbatten, who told them "you think you're the forgotten army, you're not, most people have never heard of you in the first place" (expletives deleted!)
LOL excellent!
.
I should have added cc1, my father was out there too with the RAF and thought highly of Mountbatten. They were preparing for the invasion of Japan when the bombs were dropped and finished it all.
.
Mountbatten seems to have inspired a lot of affection from the Boys in Blue, I will never forget my father going into a pub to get us all a lunchtime drink and coming out in tears saying "those ***** ******* ******** have murdered my boss". I'm not sure if the tears or the language shocked me most.
