Ignorance breeds fear, and this is never more so than in the field of sexual orientation.
Men are largely afraid of homosexuality - they cover it with their ribald jokes and barely submerged hostility, and it is all too easy to lump every misunderstanding together - saves time and mental efort, specially when mental effort is a seriously limited resource.
Each generation moves forward. My father's generation were typical queer-bashers, verbally if not literally - I have a far more tolerent attitude, and my children embrace difference in other people.
So no, I don't think that view is the norm - except in the fervent followers of the Catholic church, but as i have mentioned on another thread, rightiousness leads very quickly to slef-rightiousness, which is a very dangerous concept.
