Isn't the time long overdue that certain restrictions are put on these mobility scooters?

1/ They should not be allowed to anyone, only persons that cannot get about in any other way. i.e.(doctors certificate needed)

2/ Persons who do not hold a driving licence, should be required to take a driving test to prove their ability to handle a scooter.

3/ All scooters should be safety examined each year.

But let us not only target mobility scooter users, Third Party Insurance, and road safety tests should be mandatory for pedal cyclists also.

They are useful for people who genuinely struggle to get around but otherwise they have turned into a lazy b@$t@rd$ toy
Totally agree, apparentely they have a formation team just like those police motorcyles displays,do most of them need them, they are ruthless speed wise...
i cant imagine anyone would use one , unless needed
I'm sure one day there'll be an olympic sport featuring mobility scooter racing
Their use was banned on the Tyne/Wear Metro system 2 years ago after a number of incidents of users boarding the train at the platform then crashing on to the line through the doors at the other side. I think it is probably the user, more than the device, which is at fault.
yes helen, i do agree with AOG on this. I use them probbaly on a weekly basis from shopmobility, and in places like sainsbury's and tesco. It makes perfect sense to me to have insurance as they have "fast" acceleration and have seen a few people out of control on them before. In no place ive ever borrowed one from has anyone asked me if i know how to drive it or if i feel confident doing so. They are heavy and could easily knock down someone hale and hearty, let alone vulnerable. I have also seen people use them in my local shopmobility where if i'm being honest, the only "disability" they seem to have is that they are fat and lazy. Of course, i don't actually know these people, so they may well ahve angina, or some other hidden disability

I don't not wish to appear rude but you are so naive.

Many use them when they don't really need one.

They use them for a cheap form of transport, without all the hassle of owning other types motorised transport.

I have even seen a teenager borrow his Nana's scooter, to ride around on.
No comment to make but some great mobility scooters here, especially the pimped model and the caterpillar track model.

For your information these are not ramblings, just subjects I add so others have the enjoyment of adding their 2 pennies worth.

So perhaps rather than start off by adding your snide remarks, perhaps you could assure us all that you are quite proficient in using one of these scooters, seeing that you don't normally use one?
well in fairness AOG, they are not hard! You press 1 lever for forward, 1 for back and turn the handles to steer.
you can master them in about 30 seconds However, for that 1st 30 seconds it can be a bit scary - my husband deposited me in the car the other day, then "drove" the scooter back to the shopmobility place (all of about 10 meters away) and nearly crashed into the wall!
I have been advised to get one as my mobility is very limited, I struggle to walk 100yds. I won't get one though as I would feel really stupid at my age (42) riding about on/in it. I also have the problem that we live in a terraced house and have to step up from the pavement to enter the house,I could never get a scooter up the step and into our tiny hallway.

I do know of a woman who has a scooter because she is overweight, she has no other disability that couldn't be cured by her losing the weight. Of course because she always uses the scooter and never walks she just keeps getting fatter and fatter. She has a habit of knocking into people in our village and most now know to look out for her and move swiftly out of her path.
