Firstly, look at this article which covers the same story: http://www.bbc.co.uk/...gland-london-12494647

Note the words: "a leading union has claimed" and "A St George's Healthcare NHS Trust spokesman said no decisions had been made about jobs cuts or ward closures."

Also note that the hospital employs 7000 people and this is a 7% cut. Now most businesses that I know of could easily run at the same capacity with a 7% cut in employees.

It's always easy to spend money - fact is that there isn't any money to spend - unless you know how to magic some up - maybe we could invade Germany or something?
Oneeyedvic << A St George's Healthcare NHS Trust spokesman said no decisions had been made about jobs cuts or ward closures." >>

Unison says 500 jobs will be cut, at least three wards closed, and 100 beds lost.

Nurse Jane Pilgrim says: "This is a sad day for staff."

A spokesman for St George's Healthcare NHS Trust, says: "St George's Healthcare is not immune from the financial challenges currently facing the wider NHS, and we have been open with staff and unions about the need to achieve £55m savings during 2011-12.

<< we have been open with staff and unions about the need to achieve £55m savings >>

Wonder how Unison worked out these figures and to answer the question they will have lost a lot of voters. Don't forget a lot of people who voted in the last election would not have been affected by Mad Maggie now they see what the tories are like they may start to believe the people who had to live under a mad tyrant
TheTruthHere

Can you tell me where the money comes from to fund these non cuts that you want?
let me ask you this Oneeyedvic all these people who are losing their jobs are not going to just find a job straight away they will have to sign on.

Will you be one of the sheep on here posting about benefit scroungers.

You have No problem with them losing their job will you have a problem with them claiming their benefits ?
You have to look at the recent past to see how we have got to the current predicament.

Gordon Brown was praised to the rafters for injecting £bns into the NHS just a few years ago. Unfortunately there were no checks or balances on how the money was spent except for the massive increases in doctors pay. This injection brought the spending up to European levels which before lagged way behind.

So we have a NHS still operating behind our European partners and paying through the nose for it.

The only solution is to redress this situation by cutting staff and making the remaining personnel would to a higher level and throughput. Its a technique used by all private industrial concerns.

The waiting lists will start to grow again.

OK for the healthy no so if you are poor and ill.

Back to the good old Mad Maggie years i'm alright jack sod you.
Right, so Unison says 500 people will lose their jobs and 3 wards will close, the hospital says they haven't made any decisions about the number of staff who will go nor what positions they hold.

Wouldn't it be a good idea to hold the outrage back until such times as actual numbers are known instead of jumping to conclusions ? For all you know it could mean a cut in admin personnel, which surely isn't such a bad thing given the hullabaloo over the increased number of managers in hospitals which came after the massive increase in spending on the NHS under the last government. It could also mean that they don't replace some of the staff who leave or retire, which would count as jobs lost in union terms but at least does not mean firing people, or not as many.

Oh and there are people at St Georges who do swing the lead, but I have been given to understand that getting rid of people in the NHS is not an easy thing to do, so perhaps some of the slackers will go too.
can i refer you back to

<< we have been open with staff and unions about the need to achieve £55m savings >>
Refer me back to anything you like ... from both of the reports, the hospital as said that no decisions on what jobs will go have yet been made. Of course if Unison knows better than the hospital management what is going to happen they might want to consider lending out their crystal balls
Huderon when the frim i worked for said there was job loses the local paper got in touch with them . The firm said no specific number has been decided yet. (Tues pm)

Union official laughed held up a piece of paper with the departments where 85 people would be losing there jobs. He got the list the day before at 10 am. (Mon am)

It is Labour we should never vote in again.

It is very easy to waste money and give it away and squander it as the labour party did while in power. Any idiot can do that.

But someone always has to clean up labours mess afterwards, and usually it is down to the Tory party.

Labour are seen as the "fun" younger brother, irresponsible and giving free money to everyone. The Tories are like the serious older brother who has to sort of the mess.

Lets hope Labour never get in power again.
Truthhere // Back to the good old Mad Maggie years i'm alright jack sod you. //
Could you please explain what was mad about Maggie ?
I know she allowed millions of working people to buy their own homes which was not possible under Labour.
I know she curbed the power of the unions which had destroyed much of our industry . So much so that the rest of the world described the UK as the sick man of Europe.
I know we had lost our position as Europes export/inport capital because the unions wouldn't allow containerisation. So Maggie encouraged the private docks Felixstowe to regain a lot of that trade from Rotterdam. I know she got a big rebate from the EU which was given away again by Tony Blair . I know she regained the Falklands. I know the National debt was reduced to lowest since WW II . I know the Russian had great respect for her and called her the Iron Lady. I know she was re-elected again and again by the electorate
so most people felt she was mostly doing the right thing. I also know there was unemployment because the giant subsidies to the inefficient state industries was reduced and the poll tax was a big mistake. Taking all this into consideration why do you call her Mad ? What is the Truthhere ?
She made a wasteland of what once was a sea of factories never mind the coal mines.
The pickets attacked by mounted police need i go on

That is where the sod you i am alright Jack comes into it.

Only the action of a MAD PERSON would let all the industry go down the pan.

Hence why we all call her Mad Maggie
Chances are there will be enough unfilled and frozen posts that very few redundancies will be needed.BTW I laughed at the idea of St Georges 'Centre of Excellence' ask anyone who lives near it they all ask to be sent anywhere but...
TheTruthHere, that was your experience in one firm. I don't see Unison waving a bit of paper around with a list of the jobs and wards which will go at St George's so I'll go by what is in the report and not speculation.

Souldarkness, the last op I had was at St George's and went without a hitch. But that was day surgery. One I had there previously didn't go so well in that I had to wait a bit longer than anticipated to have the op after an emergency admission, and needed antibiotics and a slightly longer than expected stay there afterwards because of the infection. But mostly when we have needed to go there, the treatment has been good. Perhaps we just got lucky or, more likely, some areas are better than others there.
// She made a wasteland of what once was a sea of factories //
Factories like British Leyland you mean which went on strike every couple of weeks.
Why did most of our industry close down and move to Europe . Inefficiency , bad quality and strikes. Inefficient coal mines that cost the taxpayers millions every week to keep open. . British Steel that cost the taxpayer tens of millions every week .
Would you have continued making us pay out that sort of money to keep them open.
The dockers who tried to control every industry for 5 miles on either side on the Thames
when they weren't on strike and refused to modernise. Result all our trade went to Rotterdam and Europe. Remember the winter of discontent when the country was brought to its knees .by wide spread strikes when refuse piled up in the streets. Even funerals couldn't take place.
All this happened before Maggie came to power . You no doubt would have kept that socialist
paradise going . She was elected to sort the mess out . She inherited a mess created by your friends. She wasn't perfect, nobody is, but at time that we needed a Iron Lady.
We needed someone like Margaret Thatcher to sort out the unions who were enjoying tea and biccies at No 10
Shut the factories down put the workers on the dole and then have a good old nag at the out of work lazy b@ggers.

Take a look round some of the welsh valleys there are no jobs, nothing , zilch

No win situation for the working class.
spookyman // Take a look round some of the welsh valleys there are no jobs, nothing , zilch//

Right I've done that several times ! It's been like that for 40 odd years .
Now tell me what YOU would do about it apart from letting them stay permanently on benefits.
So what did Labour do about the Welsh valleys - when they ahad the cash to sort it ?

Absolutley Bugger all thats what.

Get the rose tinted specticals off and take a look arounf you. 2 Trillion in debt, who ran that up after inheriting the best economy every of an incoming Government, now let me se Nooo labour I believe.
