Tight as the SNP
I am really surprised that the hospital did not have the right equipment to cut through metal. So far as I am concerned the "rusty hacksaw" did not touch flesh but cut through metal only and was well sterilised beforehand. Have read the whole story on the STV website and am at a loss to see what else the surgeon could have done under the circumstances.
Jealousy doesn't become you Canary.
I agree with maggiebee.....no big deal and happens not infrequently.

I remember a surgeon trying to remove a pin and plate at our hospital, just could n't get a strong enough screwdriver to make any impression. hes sent out a message to the gardener who produced a "solid" screwdriver which was sterilised and off he went.

Why is this in Jokes?
Actually this was probably the best solution. A new hacksaw blade is covered in a protective coat of blue paint which flakes off when first used. These bits wouldn't have been sterilised.
Surely this is News not a joke.!!
