Hi, I want to rewire an old floor lamp (UK) type.

Do I need an earth wire in the cable, and how many amps dose the fuse need to be?.

TIA

What's in it now

Yes especially if it's got some metal you can touch. 3amp fuse.

Assuming you meant  a plug fuse 3a.

Whether you need an earth wire depends on whether the lamp has a connection for an earth wire. It probably has if, as you say, it is a UK lamp. But the advice of checking what you are removing is sound, unless some cowboy has had a go at it in the past. Mains lighting only needs 3 amp fuses, lightbulbs don't take much power.

1,  An old cable that's seen better days, that's why I want to renew it.

2, All wood and plastic.

3, Yes the fuse in the 3 pin plug.

4, No cowdies hereabouts, just the good the bad and the darnright ugly.

Thanks all

If the old cable is 3 core replace it with 3 core if it's 2 core replace it with 2 core

Invest in new 3 core cable, and the earth wire needs to be connected to the metal lamp, oh and yes a 3 amp fuse.
