Tax Return form
3 Answers
Earlier this year I filled in my Tax Return as I am registered self-employed.Today however I recieved a letter saying they couldn't accept the form because I have a student loan and therefore need to do a full Tax Return. The short form I filled in was the one they sent me and the same as the one I filled in last year. I also had a student loan last year so why didn't I have to do a full Tax Return then? I'm not sure whether to just fill in the form when it comes or give them a ring to see why this has happened. Is it just a mistake on their behalf? I've got until 31st January to return it.
Thanks in advance

Its a form you can do if your turnover is below a certain value or your income is not complicated. Obviously your student loan does make things a bit more complicated so my guess is they missed it last year.
The good news is the full form is not that difficult. Id recommend you do this ASAP and you can download what you need from their website. There is a backlog of forms to process at the Revenue and if yours isnt processed in time youll find yourself guessing at how much to pay on 31 Jan. Im sure you know this, but if you get it to them before the end of September each year you wont have to do the calculation yourself, which is nice.

Thanks for your reply. They are sending out a form to me so I think I'll just fill that in. I feel more comfortable that way. I know the full forms aren't as difficult as they look. I just hate doing them! And it's annoying as I already filled one in this year. They won't expect me to calculate my own tax will they? After all the reason I'm doing it late is because they originally sent me the wrong form. I did get the form I filled in sent off before the end of September.
Might be worth a covering letter to that effect when you return your form. Alternatively register to do it online and it'll calculate as you go along. The process is quite straightforward. It doesn't matter that you're being sent a paper form, you just use the codes on the front. Be warned though. You have to set up and then wait for them to send you something before you can actually use the service, so don't leave it too late.
