where did the phrase to do something 'off ones own bat' come from? as in to do something independently of everyone else

The phrase 'off his/one's own bat' has been used since the 1740s to refer to the score made by a cricketer's own hits of the ball during a game. It came, over time, to refer to all sorts of other situations in which the individual element is important.
