I think the idea of soul mates makes people think that there is one person out there with whom you will automatically have a perfect relationship, and I think that this idea makes people unhappy with their real relationships that will always need to be worked on.
I' m much happier with the model that there are any number of people out there with whom you can create a loving, communicative, sexy relationship, as long as you do the work to create it.
I think you need to examine the word to understand the meaning- does the term "mate" not refer to a friend or someone close to you? I think the big misconception is that a soulmate is someone that you have some sort of romantic/sexual relationship with.
I think that a soul travels through many lives and will inhabit many different bodies- when one body dies, the soul finds a new body in the form of an infant. Have you ever heard of someone being referred to as an "old soul"- this would imply that their soul has lived many lives prior to thier current one.
A "soulmate" is another soul that you've had contact with in another lives- someone that travels with you through time and space- another soul that travels in the same circles with you through many lives. I beleive that the nature of that relationship changes with each new "life"- but the link to one another remains constant through time.
