can't stand it when people say personally when the next word is I. There is no need to say the word personally.

Any other phrases that get your goat?

or when someone says - "I turned around and said.........", I always say so they were behind you then at the time were they?
people who start every sentence with "basically........" - aaaarrrrgggghhhhh!

you've got me started now Milly.
Question Author
Ha ha, I do love a good moan about these sorts of things R1. Keep going!

The "I turned around and said" thing is horrible.
Then there's those who excuse any dipstickery with "Just playing devils advocate" - perlease!
People who say "trust me" that makes me not trust them.
so how would you put it milly if you wanted to say, something like "personally, i think that's a load of guff" you would have to say "personally, think that's a load of guff" which dosen't sound right
Question Author
One that really gets me is when people say "obviously" when what they are about to say would not be obvious at all. You see it on TV all the time, usually in interviews. It drives me nuts!
then there's "Can I get" when they mean "May I have" - that's another aaaarrrrgggghhh!
Question Author
No Bednobs, you can just say "I think that's a load of guff". No need for personally.
the point is bednobs that using "I" implies "personally" so you just say:
"I think that's a load of guff"
so you'd do away with the word personally altogether?
Question Author
No, not get rid of it. You might ask me if I think something is a load of guff and I might reply, "personally, no".
Milly "Obviously" is usually used when it's far from obvious to add a note of cynism, used all the time in "yes minister" eg: "Obviously I'm not a trained lawyer or I would not be in charge of the legal department"!
I'd take the "think" out and say "That's a load of guff" - but having become an AB addict, I would now doubt add "IMO".
Question Author
Yeah, I see what you are saying there R1 but I mean when it's used almost just to make a sentence longer. Something like, "obviously I had chicken for dinner last night". That would not be obvious to anyone who wasn't having dinner with you last night.
All of a sudden
=
suddenly
well yes in that case milly yes, bad. As bad as the rising intonation problem and the "I was like.....going to the loo " issue, death's too good for them!
What is the difference in meaning between?:

I think that's rubbish

Personally, I think that's rubbish

What nuance of meaning is added by 'personally' that isn't already there?
.
Question Author
A pattern seems to be emerging here - using more words then is neccessary (I will never be able to spell that word).
