Publicity?
I rarely agree with you Tora but in this instance I totally agree...and why do people care about people they have never met and unlikely to ever do so?
"so why make a song and dance about it?"

Probably because they're gay
It seems they care a great deal, look at the thread on Phillip already posted.

Why 'Come out' because as sure as boots is boots some kindly soul you thought was a friend will out you at the drop of a hat or the media will snap you getting out of a cab late one night.

Then the cry is 'why wasn't he honest with the viewers'.
Doesn’t have any impact here and to parrot phrase Rick Tomlinson in the Royale Family

Stops all the talk in the background, you get to do it on your terms rather than being outed, in show business it may close as many doors as it opens but publicity is usually a valuable commodity
People do care though. Homophobia still exists.
I guess he wanted to unburden himself, and leave no space for rumours or whispers. It only matters to him and his wife as far as I’m concerned.
Why not watch this, and find out from the horse's mouth as you could say. You know... That's if you care? The fact this thread exists implies you do.

"People do care though. Homophobia still exists."

20 years ago maybe a problem. Yes, it still exists - it always will. But, thes people are the minority from what I have seen. Even working on building sites I have not seen it for some time.
Spelling police alert!! What does "comming" mean?
It SHOULDN'T be a big thing, but people love knowing other people's business, especially if they're celebs. Sadly, if someone had found out and gone to the tabloids, it would've been a big scandal, by coming out this way, Schofield can better control the information. He preempted any possible leaks.
mamya - thanks for the link to the 'what's the difference?' site - I could spend hours in there ...
Yes, it's quite illuminating.
I'm inclined to agree with Mamya and rowanwitch on this - the aspect of control remains with the subject, it is not handed over to the media and social media to make a feast of it, which helps no-one and would hurt Mr Schofield's family.
The jokes about it are all over social media.

Young - homophobia does still exist.
According to someone on another thread, religious people care... but they care about a lot of things. Couples living together out of wedlock ... abortion ... but no one else panders to their foibles. They just get on with their lives - and that's what gay people should do. No need to call attention to themselves by making a fuss.
There's an expectation that you're heterosexual by default unless you declare otherwise.
Coming out is just making that declaration.

It takes some longer than others to do it. In Philip Schofields case it's more of a thing because it's taken him 40 years, during which time he's effectively been pretending not to be.
You are right ummmm homophobia does still exist,
I for one am,I can’t get my head round the homosexual act between 2 males,
To my way of thinking it’s an unnatural act,
