Not asking for answers, just confirmation on my word patterns for final three clues, as I am now going round in circles! ... I would be really grateful for confirmation only (or otherwise) of the following :-

7a M?S?S ?O?T

40a A???S ?O?P

30d D?M???A?T

Finally, I was confident of my answers for 9d and 15a but where they intersect I have "a" for 15a and "u" for 9d. Is there perhaps an alternative spelling for either answer, if so could somebody please point me in the right direction. Many thanks (S) ;o)

Guess who !!!

I have the same letters for 7a, and an extra one for 40a -
A?n?s which should help with 30d but still can't find 40a

sorry , steff
Question Author
Steff I thought 30d was probably Demandant (i.e plaintiff) but wasn't certain of US connection. (S)

think I remember seeing something about the US when I found it but now can't be sure, plus I forgot to say I hve the same problem with 15a and 9d - I think !! the across spelli ng is the right one - am not being overly helpful.

Now I am calling it a night, my typing's going as well, so willcatch up with you later, thanks for your help. Steff
Was having the same trouble as you sarumite , with 9d and 15a , but have just looked in my Brewers Dictionary of Irish Phrase and Fable and found the 9 down one spelt with an "a", and withthe second word "an" .
Question Author
Many thanks slaney, it looks af if perhaps another reference book would be useful in my collection! I had "an" for second word but couldn't find the "a" variation.
Cheers (S)
Morning sarumite. (Well, it's morning here).
I have:
7A: m?s?? Boat ('m presuming it's some kind of boat).
40A: a?n?????p
30D. Agree with your full word.
As for 9D. I'm sure they don't want the English words for James and the Irish ones I have don't fit except for the last 5 letters. So there must be an alternative Irish saying.
O-ice
PS. Did you see the message I left for you on the MM link on Sunday?
7a) I have the same letters and have an answer for this one

30a) I too have 'demandant, as seemingly an answer ... can find online reference to the word (through Google US), as being a litigant, but not a descripton as in the clue!

9d) Is an alternative spelling ... the real Irish spelling. It is on Google

15a) I have sorted the spelling for this one, by reference to a cookery book ---- too many mispellings on Google!

Happy to post answers if wanted at this stage.

I think that there is doubt over 25d .... I do not like the speling needed with the number of letters ... I think the first word should be of a length of 5 letters and should not be 6 letters!!! may be I am on the wrong track!I

Still got a few to do ....
I don't know if we are on the same wavelength re 25D. I agree that I also thought 5 letters. I made it a 6-letter word by making it a possessive - adding an s.
re 9D. If I have a U where I have an A then my Irish wording fits except for the 'a' which the clue shows as a 2-letter word as in 6-2-5.
Hello O-ice ..see above for Irish one.
Am now down to the last four sarumite-- same as you have above , and 13 a --just can't find Plato's nickname(8 3).
I'm beginning to wonder if there is a more specific word than demandant --?demurrant or something equally obscure.
hi ont-ice and shaney

I have done the same as you and added an 's' for 25down first word .... I still dont like it! All references I have found spell a simple christion name of the scottish 'inventor' of this method!

9d 5th letter is 'A' as is the 5th letter of 15a)

I too am not convinced on demandant, but nothing better yet!
Thanks Slaney. I found the alternative Irish words, but can't find a different spelling for my little warbler of 15A.
I'm guessing re Plato's nickname that it might be Athenian ?.
yes to Athenian

Beccafico

Thanks Pantheon. We are on the same track re 25D.
I still can't find the alternative spelling for my warbler. Point me towards the correct cookbooks please.
I do need a U for the 5th letter of 9 down otherwise the first word of the Irish expression does not fit.
look above ... I just wrote it down!!

it is an 'a'

Seamus An Chaca (I am not goint to translate into english ... since, I would be rapidly banned!!)
16a) I have D - T - E - can you help ( I keep thinking that it must be a scottish word) may be on the wrong track here!

17a) I have - A - T // - A - (some french word!) can you help?

43a) I have G - I - E - R - E (and still cannot find it on google)

{I have no reference books here in Middle East- only google etc!)
17a Haut Pas
Try sneath instead of snaith for 39d
its okay ... found answers on earlier thread
thanks shaney

so ... this bottom left hand corner!!!

40a) A - - - S // - - - P
if it is demandant + humped then
A - N - S // - U - P

can anyone sort this corner out, please?

Pantheon. Sorry to sound like doh!
I do have BeccAfico, but that A doesn't fit in with the
word SeamU s.
I have one more letter than you for 40A. a?n?s?o?p.
Type the whole clue for 38 D into Google and it comes up on the first answer.
It's a word I never heard of myself.
