Finished, but don't understand 23d: Stars the French lap up. Must be 'lepus', but why?

Lepus is a constalation - also french word for Hare
LE = The French PUS = SUP < Up
le...the in Frence. lap...sup(reversed)
And Sup is lap

Thanks - I got the word-play, but did not know it as a constellation!
