Over the weekend someone answered another question and gave details of an online dictionary ( I think it was Collins) that had a section that you could enter some letters and it would list all words that it could be.  I can't find this answer again or the website!  Can anyone help me with this

My daughters have gone to bed so I can't ask them to help me do a link for you but the onelook.com website is also very good - it lets you put in question marks for the missing letters and comes up with possible solutions.  Sometimes there are lots of possibilities so you can narrow the field by putting a colon after the letters/question marks you've got and then a clue word.  It then gives you links to dictionaries to find definitions so you can check whether you've found the right word.  I've found it really useful for crosswords.

Useful tools Marsh & gem_mother. Interesting to note how these dictionaries & wordbanks have favourites. Example: retrospectively trying to find 'a real stinker' - 25d in this week's Mail on Sunday crossword - Hardwood tree W Australia, used for making furniture (5), M??RI.

That's a much better link than mine, donslot. The Chambers site can't be using the full Chambers Dictionary database even though marri is in that and also their current copy of Words for Crosswords.

I have a small electronic CHAMBERS concise crossword dictionary.It works in the same way as mentioned above.I'ts very handy and I would't be without it. You sometimes see them advertised in newspapers and magazines.

One last thread from this original question, before a teaser I have planned, is that an unusual aspect of the onelook checker/speller is that you don't need the first letter - just try ?kapi. Considering next week's crosswords/puzzles we may get more time in the garden or the dog might enjoy a longer walk. Long live Zoe!
