Things To Do With School Past Or Present

I could do with a bit of help on two of these - I have answers but am not sure !!

6. first class era (6,4) - I have 'Autumn Term' for this one - being the term with the school year starts ???

21. directional flight implement (6) - I have Pointer for this one but again am unsure

Any help or advice would be appreciated

Did we use a compass at school. Maybe in Geography on field trips I suppose, but I don't remember. But I'm not sure why the clue says 'flight'

They were compasses though Tilly- a set of compasses. That's what I always say anyway.
Kids do throw them though so maybe that explains the 'flight'.

So if compass is used in school, and it is a directional flight implement, then I dont see how anything else will be the answer.

In which case the only thing that is wrong is the number of letters, and in the past this has sometimes found to be the case.
