Copper Handles Etc

I've heard claims that copper, apposed to other metals is inhospitable to viruses and bacteria to live for long.
It seems to me that this material would be a safer alternative and could be used in if used in doctors surgeries, hospitals, the home and other public places.
I'm wondering if copper alternatives are available buy and is there any scientific evidence to support these claims ?

Copper, however,is a very expensive metal and it would be nigh on impossible to replace every handle in a public place with copper. They probably would get stolen too.
