//Bosses of the London theatre
say the play, I, Joan - which
charts the life of the French
patron saint - will "offer the
possibility of another point of
view" when it arrives later this
month.
The lead role will be played by
Isobel Thom, who also uses the
pronouns "they/them".//
The pronoun bit told me everything.
Maid of Orleans or Made in Orleans?
What next? All female adaptation of The Crusades?

Rewriting her as not female and presenting it as progress is a massive disappointment.’
To be fair, so did The Wizard of Oz.
How do we know Joan of Arc wasn’t the C15th equivalent of non-binary?

There’s even been learned debate about her sexuality:

A little Catholic girl who's fallen in love
A face on a page, a gift from above
She should have known better than to give her heart
She should have know better than to ever part

Indeed Untitled...and this representation doesn't detract from any of the others. For instance, Dreyer's 'Passion of Joan of Arc' will always be the classic version and I don't recall people reassessing Bob Dylan after Cate Blanchett's performance as him in I'm Not There.
Or even David Suchett as Lady Bracknell in The Importance of Being Earnest (which I saw, and he was pretty good in actually).
This story seems designed to give the use crowd the vapours.

Generates interest in the play. I would never have heard of it. Only this week there was that story about the Fat Controller and Dick Turpin - unlike this one they smelled a bit fake but publicity is publicity.
And if Isobel Thom‘s performance is anywhere near as good as Cate Blanchett or David Suchett - winning!
And the point about Shakespeare makes alot of sense.

….or pandering to the wokery that seems all-pervading in 21st century.
Won’t be long before we get Hitler: The Musical or Hungerford through the interpretation of dance.

You may indeed be right - but I think this is an example of the usual suspects looking for something to mess themselves over.
Either the play will be a success which means the Globe were thinking along the right lines in staging it, or it’ll be a disaster and this idea won’t be tackled again.
Whatever happens people with voted with their cheque books.
