if you know any very young children, say, up to age 18 months, then you can make them a rag book. Just use some plain calico which is cheap, or any other fabrics that are lying around and sew randomly onto each page different oddments of fabrics/textiles. Then sew all the pages together, I think it is easier to lay the pages out as double spreads and then just sew down the middle, then when folded they make a book. You can use up all your odds and ends and my little girl loved this book when I made it for her. I even did some sewing by hand with wool straight onto the pages.
I normally coordinate the fabrics into colours so that the book has a theme, but you could equally do textures, or shapes etc etc. It is a lovely idea. I even left the edges of the pages raw for extrarich tactile experience. babies LOV|E these, and they are much more interesting than Usbourne, "that's not my, ?????" books.
happy christmas
