Is this an English thing never heard of this until I moved to Norfolk. Though my parents would put out a plate with shortbread, cheddar cheese, and black bun.

No idea what black bun is. Aye, sausage rolls were common enough in the evening at my family Christmases.
no, don't go with sausage rolls!....so boring!..........lots of other tasty snacks to be had instead!.......
Black bun? It's a very rich dark fruit cake sandwiched between two layers (top and bottom) of a very thin crisp pastry. It's a Scottish thing which is traditional at new year, don't care for it myself though. You really can't beat a good sausage roll at any time of the year
I thought sausage rolls were eaten for Christmas tea the world over; especially with the previous generation who would team them up with some cheese and pineapple on sticks.
sausage rolls are just party food, nothing to do with Norfolk
We have party food (and bloody turkey sandwiches) for Christmas tea, I let the kids chose what party food we get Asda to deliver.

We allways make home made sausage rolls for Christmas.
I've only made sausage rolls from scratch once. I put Peri Peri sauce in them and they were delish!!
My home made sausage rolls are 80% sausage / 20% pastry. Shop bought ones are the reverse 80% pastry/ 20% sausage. No comparison !
I made sausage rolls from scratch once as well. Had to do something with it till the E45 took effect.
Ewww Douglas!! =s
Whats the matter with stand pies, or pork pies? That is our usual Christmas tea, pie, pickles cheese and maybe a turkey sandwich and salad if anyone has any room. Oh and jelly and icecream.
That's nothing, you've heard the expression "a trifle rash" I suppose?
Sausage rolls at any time of the year I say! I think they are common items on a Christmas menu though.
I love home made sausage rolls.

What's a stand pie, Gran?
-- answer removed --
It's a big pork pie, taller with heavier pastry. I prefer the smaller pies.
Maybe stand pie's shorthand for steak and kidney naomi.
Or not. :P
